Yes, the left (most of it, because there's also a sane, center-left) dutifully follows the anti-Zionist, antisemitic path laid down by the Soviet Union in the 50s and 60s as a strategy to win influence in the Arab and Muslim world.

The Soviet Union supported Zionists in the 40s, selling them weapons despite the American boycott on arms sales to the Middle East, in the hope that the Jews in Palestine will kick out the British from the region. Fun fact: the Arab communist party in Palestine was pro-Zionist then. The tables have turned once it became clear that the US and other western powers were far more likely to project power in the Middle East than the Soviet Bear. A relentless, vicious anti-Zionist and antisemitic campaign was how Kremlin responded to the situation. Throwing Israel under the proverbial bus, the Soviets managed to gain favors in the Arab and Muslim world - pro-Russia, anti-western governments in some Arab countries and a military base in Syria.

The Arab oil boycotts of the 70s delivered the final blow to the pro-Israel stance in the western world. Europe was hardly hit by the boycotts, especially Holland whose revenues from the trade vanished. No wonder Holland is still funding anti-Zionist NGOs in Israel and the PA.

The prevalent narrative in the western world is that of a privileged white European Jewry oppressing helpless brown natives in their own homeland. Such a perversion of both reality on the ground and historical facts wouldn't be possible without a mass media ready and willing to knowingly spread the lies.

I searched the article about AIPAC in the newspaper's archive, didn't find it. What AIPAC really said, as published in the New York Times at the time, is that AIPAC supports the decision of president Bush, whatever that decision will be.

The Israeli government opposed the invasion of Iraq. But don't tell Grau, I'd hate to smash his happy bubble.

@Grau attributed the quote to the NY Sun, not NY Times.

Is there a source for that?

I know. I couldn't find the article in the NY Sun's archive. The only article on the subject I could find was in the NY Times.

    Sure.

    From the horse's mouth

    and later from the ME
    https://www.al-monitor.com/originals/2021/07/netanyahu-reportedly-urged-trump-attack-iran

Please note the report says this was not the first time Israel has tried to get the US to attack Iran.

"Netanyahu’s government threatened to strike Iran in private conversations with US officials before, most notably as the Obama administration sought nuclear talks with Tehran. Former US defense officials have told Al-Monitor that even a joint US-Israeli strike against Iran would almost certainly ignite a conflict between the countries and possibly a wider regional war."

Israel warned us against Iraq invasion, US official says Chief of staff of former secretary of state reveals that large number of senior Israeli officials warned Bush administration that invasion of Iraq would be destabilizing to region. 'The Israelis were telling us Iraq is not the enemy - Iran is the enemy,' he says. https://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3444393,00.html

You claimed that Israel wanted Bush to invade Iran instead of Iraq. At the time, Israel asked for sanctions against Iran, not war.

The UN is far more than the USA.
and as for AIPAC, you win some, you lose some.
The point is it shouldn't , IMO, be there at all.
I can think of no other country which asserts so much pressure on one country to act to its own benefit.

(I could be wrong there, international politics being so complex, but can you??)

BTW Israel also has influence in the UK...it calls itself Friends of Israel and act in the same way. It is widely known that they offered one of these free tours of Israel to our current Home Secretary a short while back.

Yeah, but the point was the US vote.

Obama pushed hard for that resolution.

Maybe you need to stop looking exclusively at Israel and acknowledge there's a whole wide lobbies-filled world out there. For instance, Japan, China, and Qatar are way ahead of Israel. Foreign lobbying is legal in the US, by the way.

Please explain why is everything wrong when Israel is involved, but perfectly fine for other countries.

Sure, but then they don't represent their country anymore, so saying that Israel wanted the US to invade Iran in 2003, even if (a big "if") Bibi really said something about it to American politicians, is pushing the narrative way out of the boundaries of credible.

Bibi was finance minister then, purposefully kept far from foreign politics. He was a good finance minister, by the way.

    Briefly put, no

Israel has repeatedly tried to get the US to attack its Islamic neighbors beginning with the Lavon Affair(1) in the 1950.

Again in 1967, the Israelis deliberately attacked our clearly marked USS Liberty with unmarked planes so that the US would think that Egypt was responsible for the treacherous betrayal by Israel in which IDF subsequently murdered 34 American G.I.s.

US planes were sent to repulse the unprovoked Israeli attack but they were recalled by LBJ because he feared retaliation by Israeli lobbies.

    (1) "THE LAVON AFFAIR IS HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF?"

    http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/WRHARTICLES/lavon.html

EXCERPT "In 1954, Israeli agents working in Egypt planted bombs in several buildings, including a United States diplomatic facility, and left evidence behind implicating Egyptian Muslims as the culprits. The ruse would have worked, had not one of the bombs detonated prematurely, allowing the Egyptians to capture and identify one of the bombers, which in turn led to the round up of an Israeli spy ring.

Some of the spies were from Israel, while others were recruited from the local Jewish population. Israel responded to the scandal with claims in the media that there was no spy ring, that it was all a hoax perpetrated by "anti-Semites".

But as the public trial progressed, it was evident that Israel had indeed been behind the bombing."CONTINUED

Just as not all Israelis have the same agenda, Israeli lobbies do not think like more sensible senior Israeli officials.
Of course they would have preferred that the US attack Iran but as long as the US is sacrificing blood and resources helping Israel to achieve regional hegemony (aka "Greater Israel"), they don't care which Muslims the US kills.

You are distorting what the article states.

For example, the article does not state: "Israel is also responsible for all of America's oil costs, including the Strategic Oil Reserve."

    It States:
"Conflicts in the Middle East have been very costly to the U.S., as well as to the rest of the world. An estimate of the total cost to the U.S. alone of instability and conflict in the region—which emanates from the core, Israeli-Palestinian conflict—amounts to close to $3 trillion, measured in 2002 dollars. This is an amount almost four times greater than the cost of the Vietnam war, also reckoned in 2002 dollars.

Even this figure underestimates the costs because certain classes of expenditure remain unquantified. In particular, no reliable figure is available for the costs of "Project Independence," Washington's lavishly promoted effort to reduce U.S. dependence on oil from the Middle East. That effort, which was subverted early on by diverse local special interests, was designed primarily to insulate Israel from any new "Arab oil weapon" after 1973/74, and may easily have cost $1 trillion."
    CONTINUED

Without your additional distortions, the article clearly states the true extent of Israel's unparalleled cost to Americans in blood and resources.

In a brief moment of honesty, Netanyahu summed up the true nature of the US - Israeli alliance:

Once we squeeze all we can out of the United States, it can dry up and blow away. -- Benjamin Netanyahu (*)

Nonsense. Its lunacy to blame Israel for all the things listed in the table I posted from your link.

Next they will blame Israel for all of the foreign aid given to South America.

    LOL!!!!

I find it funny how some people think if it wasn't for Israel, Shiites & Sunnis would love each other, Lebanese Christians and Muslims would love each other, the various ruling tribal elites in Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia would love each other, there would have been no Cold War competition for the support of Middle Eastern countries.

It's all Israel's fault. Without Israel there would be world peace and everyone would be singing kumbaya.

    LOL!!!!

I'm sorry but it's naive ignorant lunacy to claim that the cost of the Israel Palestinian conflict is three trillion dollars.

That estimate includes things that have literally nothing to do with Israel Palestinian conflict.

It includes foreign aid to Somalia and Turkey and Greece and Ethiopia.

It suggests that if not for the Israel Palestinian conflict there would have been no Cold War competition for Middle Eastern support, no conflict between Shiites and Sunnis, no conflict between Christians and Muslims in Lebanon.

No conflict between the various Muslim tribal clans in the Levant.

    This is naive stupidity.

You've wasted several comments misrepresenting what the article(*) says.

Let the readers see for themselves the innumerable hidden ways in which keeping the region safe for Israeli regional hegemony costs Americans dearly in blood and resources.

Did you know that any aid to Israel is prohibited under the Symington - Glenn Amendments(1) but somehow it gets through anyway?

their claim that the cost of the Israel-Palestine conflict is even close to $3 trillion, is ignorant lunacy, as it includes the costs of the 1991 Iraq war, the costs of protecting the Saudis and other Gulf States from Iraqi attack, the costs of aid to Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Greece, Turkey, Sudan, Afghanistan, and the costs to the USA of the Iranian Revolution and subsequent boycott of Iranian contracts, business, goods and oil.

blaiming all of this on the Israel-Palestine conflict is ignorant BS, ignores the Cold War conflicts, ignores the Shia-Sunni conflicts, ignores the tribal conflicts between the ruling elites that emerged after WW1 in the Middle East.

WRMEA is clearly a bunch of ignorant buffoons, suffering from IDS "Israel Derangement Syndrome".
