It's absurdly simplifying to claim it's either Rubles or Europe has to use wood to heat their homes, nonsense. Firstly, there are other suppliers around the world. The problem is, Russian NG is relatively cheap, the infrastructure is there and has been used for decades. In contrast to that, transporting LNG from the UAE or Quatar to Europe is more expensive, so European countries willl probably have to pay more. Tis a nuisance, nothing more. Secondly, vast majority of European countries still have reserves to get through the next winter into spring next year. Thirdly, Norway and the Netherlands have already increased their production and there is a new so-called 'baltic pipe" that will soon deliver NG from Norway via Denmark and Poland to the continent. Algeria has signaled they would like to export more NG to Europe via Spain. The Infrastructure is more complicated and the EU will have to spend more on gas and oil. Claiming it's 'either Rubles or wood' is just silly. Doesn't have a lot to do with reality.

Yes, the process is slow. Everything one time comes to an end.

Why the hell normal people have to pay twice now for gas in Germany? The government impose sanctions on Russia and get kick back.

Common people in democracies can vote. When this crisis will be solved electors will have the opportunity [sooner or later] to give a good or a bad mark to their politicians. Personally I think that EU has been a bit slow to react and to impose sanctions, anyway the political will is clear: that's the direction we are going to follow.
Furthermore military aids to Ukraine are going to increase as well.

The point is simple: shorter is the crisis less heavy the consequences will be [also economical].
We've got the interest to do what's possible to stop the war, not in months, but in weeks.

You probably wanted to say "pay twice as much", I assume. Sanctions are never one hundred percent one-sided, there's always a counter effect, usually to a very limited degree though and governments using sanctions know this. It's the very nature of sanctions. If you're referring to gas as in 'petrol', the price hasn't doubled in Germany. It's currently about 2,05-2,20, depending on where you live, used to be 1,70-1,80 a few weeks ago.

Putin's demand for ruble payments? No way! say EU nations

BRUSSELS (AP) — President Vladimir Putin's threat to have “unfriendly” countries pay for Russian natural gas exports only in rubles from now on got the not-so-friendly treatment from European Union nations Thursday.

“I don’t think anybody in Europe really know how rubles look like,” said Slovene Prime Minister Janez Jansa. “Nobody will pay in rubles.”

If others put it less bluntly, it came down to the same — from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, who as former chief of the European Central Bank, knows something about currencies.

What Putin has yet to figure out is that he has a very weak hand (poker, it means you don't have the cards to win).

What he used to do isn't going to work well now. He went too far.

I have a mild interest in economics, and I am wildly curious to see how this economic attack plays out.

Indeed. He is miscalculating with Europe the same way he miscalculated with Ukraine, it would seem. He doesn't yet realize that he's not nearly as powerful as he thought.

    I just laugh

The Russian designated 'hostile countries' will be paying for all sorts of commodities in rubles, that's a fact. Some countries will pay rubles when monthly contracts are rolled over and some will pay rubles when long term contracts are renewed. But they will pay in rubles. And they have probably figured out by now that they need the Russians, the Russians don't need them. Hence the idiotic nature of the sanctions.

I agree that the dollar as the world currency is waning, but the Chinese currency is valued off the dollar still. It was a pivot China made when there was too much concern about them setting the value as arbitrarily as they were.

As for Russia, who cares what they want. The reason their currency is "strong" is because nobody wants it and they have jacked interest rates up to 20%

I'd venture to guess both of you were born after 1996.

The US and Britain banned all East Bloc currencies from the global market, so from 1948 to 1996 it was illegal to buy or sell Russian Rubles, Romanian Lei, Hungarian Forints et al on the world market.

Those countries could not sell anything in their own currencies or buy anything on the global market in their own currencies, unless the East Bloc States were trading between themselves.

Russia was forced to sell everything in Dollars, Marks, Francs or Pound Sterling and then use those currencies to buy things to import.

That coerced Russia into a planned economy.

That's why Russians didn't have blue jeans, or cassette tapes or tomatoes or cucumbers and all the many other things you take for granted.

Their economy was an export economy geared toward exporting the most profitable commodities to get Dollars, Marks, Francs and Pounds to buy the things that they don't have.

What do you think would happen if Russia and Britain conspired to ban the US Dollar from being traded globally?

Your economy would collapse overnight and your Standard of Living would drop to the 1930s.

Yes, and ironically, that's what this conflict is all about: The US Dollar.

So, if Russia illegally overthrew the Mexican government just like Bush illegally overthrew the Ukrainian government in 2004, you're saying the US should take a "time out?"

And if Russia illegally overthrew the Mexican government for the purpose of putting airbases in Mexico, just like the US illegally overthrew the Ukrainian government so's it could put airbases there, the US should take a "time out?"

Then, if Russia starts channeling money into the western US to fund "pro-Whatever" groups there and starts smuggling weapons, ammunition, equipment and supplies to those groups in the western US, the US should take a "time out?"

Naturally, the US will move to suppress the insurgents in the western US and when it does, Russia will insist on a No-Fly Zone over the eastern US and use its airbases in Mexico to enforce it, and the US should take a "time out?"

Logic dictates the US should invade Mexico to keep all of that from happening, but you're saying the US should take a "time out," right?

Because, we all know you're not a hypocrite, right?
