The Republican National Committee is withdrawing from presidential debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates, saying the body has proved too partisan to be trusted to host the high-profile showdowns.

RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel said the RNC voted to pull out of the CPD after the group refused to adopt changes in response to the GOP’s complaints.

“Today, the RNC voted to withdraw from the biased CPD, and we are going to find newer, better debate platforms to ensure that future nominees are not forced to go through the biased CPD in order to make their case to the American people,” Ms. McDaniel said.

In short, the Republicans are not abandoning the debates, they are just abandoning the Commission on Presidential Debates as they feel the body has become a Democratic Partisan group and that they are not getting a fair shake on moderators, decisions, etc. from the group. It's hard to blame them after the debacles from the last two Presidential elections, not to mention the past with Crowley and Romney where she clearly put her finger on the scale and was wrong the whole time she did it.

It's a good move for the Republicans as they will be in the driver seat for the 2024 elections and they won't need debates if the Democrats do not agree to a fair environment and set of moderators. The Democrats need the debates, not the Republicans in 2024.

I for one want 3 debates minimum, but I get the Republicans telling the CPD goodbye.

I would have 3 debates under the following formats.

    (1) Sean Hannity and Rachel Maddow as moderators. Each candidate is muted while the other is providing their answer. Note, I am not a fan of either Hannity or Maddow, but let's have two known biased moderators take their best shots. (2 hours)
    (2) No holds barred in an open debate where the two candidates are given a new subject every 15 minutes with a 5 minute time for each candidate on a subject and then a 2.5 minute rebuttal for each candidate. No real moderators. No crowd to cheer or boo.
    (3) Let's give Rogan a shot. (2) 2 hour sessions where each candidate is given the "hotseat" with Rogan tearing into them individually without the other present. Then a third night where both candidates appear to deal with the greatest points and rebuttals.

It's time to evolve. The Presidential debates have become bias and stale.

The media, Big Tech, Hollywood and the FBI are controlled by the left.

Republicans who criticize Trump are Rinos.

    Democrats are communists.

    Election is rigged.

.... And the Commission on Presidential Debates is biased.

Another day in the parallel reality of MAGA.

Talk about a useless "commission." The parties can set up debates with TV networks without any help from a "commission."

You expect the Democrats to join the RNC in their cowardice?? I wouldn't bet on it...

If there are no presidential debates in 2024 and beyond, everybody will know the reason why. I'm not crying about it, since I barely made it through the first one in 2020, but there was always some tiny hope the Republicans would nominate somebody capable of debate next time...

Probably a good idea. Honestly I have a hard time believing the debates really influence voters that much once out of primary.

Here's what I suggest.... the CPD put on a 2024 event, with Joe on stage with several top D leaders (Nancy, Chuck, Durbin, Warner, Kamala) for a simple discussion of where America stands under D leadership and the fascist shithole we'd become otherwise.

They can sit comfortably around a coffee table and calmly push the product.

They can even have a completely biased moderator (like Chris Wallace) ask some prepared or audience questions and keep the discussion moving. Most importantly, don't let Joe speak loudly... he's much better quieter....

Sort of like "The View" with old people instead of women...

It looks like GOPis setting up for a stinker of a candidate. Another half-baked aggressive animal.

Weak is a poor choice of a word to use.

Pansies is a better word for the current GOP.

You guys are definitely missing the real opportunity here. That Commission is the product of negotiation between the DNC, and the RNC. The one thing they could all agree on, let's keep out the Libertarians, the Green Party, the Constitutional party, and the Workers party candidates! The only real opportunity for smaller parties to get any real time in American's homes, to market their ideas, their candidates came once every four years and it inevitably required a lawsuit against this commission that was a total loser of a lawsuit.
The real reason Sanders registered as a Dem, and sought the Dem nomination originally, was so that media might be forced to present to his Social Democrat ideas if they came from a member of the two party duopoly.

This may be the time to really push hard for a Presidential debate that is inclusive of much broader set of candidates, platforms and visions than just that stale self interested duopoly represented by an elephant and a donkey!

If the RNC won't participate, then the Democrat can debate the Libertarian, the Green Party candidate instead! Can you imagine Biden or Harris having to defend their policies, their platform from attacks on both the left and the right?

    Why the hell not?

No other candidate but Trump would tolerate running for a Party that did this. God how I hope we can trust the American people to show what they really think of this conduct and kick the entire GOP to the curb in 2022. One might accuse me of lacking realistic political cynicism in having faith in this but at this point it looks to be all we have left.

Here we go again: The radical right, represented by the wannabe dictator, Benito Trump, is always playing the victim card. RNC is lying when it hallucinates that the presidential commission is biased towards Republicons. The goal of RNC is to negotiate a bias in favor of Republicons.

You'd have to be biased to not see the bias. "Kick the entire GOP to the curb in 2022", lol yeah sure, good luck with that.

"I'm not recommending for every future president that they take a shellacking like I did last night" - 2010, President Obama. Obama had a decent economy then, not so with Biden. Usually, a political party loses when it has failed to do its job. Democrats will lose because they succeeded in doing what they’ve been promising for decades, and its "The economy, stupid" - James Carville. 1992.

Except those debates will never accept the other party and the presenters will ask "soft" questions to only those candidates that chose to attend, like what the RNC tried to do in both 2016 AND 2020 in the primaries.
