Utah's Westminster College offers 'Porn' class where students will watch pornographic films together

I'm not sure what academic benefit there would be from something like this. And it's in Utah of all places. The degradation of cultre continues:

 

Guaranteed some of these students are paying for the class with student loans.... that they don't feel they should have to repay.

 

As fun as this sounds there's a lot of it that I would rather pass on. Rule 34 and all.

 

I don't know how you can consider this a "degradation of culture." You realize that these porn films already exist, in our culture, right? So to analyze what they tell us about our culture, is the degrading part?

It would seem that your opinion is that we should just ignore any elements of society, that strike you as unseemly. It's obviously impossible to rate the class, from afar but, personally, I find attitudes of willful ignorance, to be the more woeful, societal attitude.

Yes the dialogue in these films will probably leave a lot to analyze, particularly in the pizza delivery portion of our culture.

Perhaps it will be more based in analyzing the musical scores that accompany these motion pictures.

 

There are reasons why porn is so popular. Perhaps this curiculum is intended to inform and discuss those reasons.

It's clearly not a film study or Arts class. It sounds like a sociology course, or something very similar. IOW, what would be analyzed would be the scenarios chosen, for example, because of what those projected images say about our attitudes towards men and women, and their views of sex.

 

THE GOP has a trifecta there, they hold the governor attorney general and both hous4s of the state legislature.

It's not the most consequential of news items, but this thread could be looked at, in a similar, analytic way, to survey PF members' attitudes on issues from sexual expression, to the role of educational institutions, to freedom of speech and censorship.


It would be a funny epilogue, if we were to later find that the class was really a ruse, set up by the psychology department, as an experiment to determine the effect of porn on classmate "hook-ups."

 

Perhaps they are studying how the watching of porn affects relationships in real life. Perhaps its about women and their self confidence when comparing themselves to porn 'characters'. Perhaps its about the expectations men place on their partners after watching porn.

Bottom line, porn DOES affect our society and the individuals within it. I'm not against it at all, but it doesn't exist in a vacuum.

Maybe it would be funny, but it would definitely be highly unethical. We don't allow researchers to run experiments on people without their informed consent.

Cool, and maybe we can also have a class where the students get to watch shoot-em up movies, war movies, and play FPS(first person shooter games). Why not, guns are a big part of our culture, it’s good that they learn how to use and respect them.
