The difference they miss is that Trump didnt hire a law firm to fabricate the derogatory information and report the payments as legal fees to the FEC. Questions as to where Obama was born didnt start with Trump. Statements of fact in the Steele Dossier were bought and paid for by the Hillary campaign.
