Respectfully I will point out the error(s) in your response. First off, and I'll come back to this, you (respectfully) do not understand the extent on the real life NAZI revolution that has been happening in Ukraine. I wonder how long it took the Germans to figure out they had a NAZI problem? Obviously too late.

Now, as to the blue portion of your post: It's written in their Constitution. Bet you didn't know that. Bet you also didn't know that retaking Crimea is also in their Constitution. Think about that combination and Article 5 of NATO....maybe a light bulb will go off. EU doesn't matter.

Now, as to the red portion of your post: You seem to not understand that Kyiv had 100,000+ of their best (NAZI, AZOV, etc. trained to NATO standards by the US) military lined up along the conflict line in the Donbass and were preparing to invade. IF Russia had simply done what you mentioned, there would have been a bloody battle...essentially urban warfare that would have leveled the cities of Donetsk and Lugansk....where 870,000 Russian citizens reside. What was Putin thinking? Divide and conquer. Spread out Ukraine's military with a soft run towards Kiev...dispersing those 100K+ to make it more manageable. That was the brilliance. Exactly what they did. Sure, there were mistakes and setbacks, but the overall strategy has worked.

Now, as to your spinners and sputnik comment. Have you ever been in a country that is currently erecting statues of WW2 Nazis? Has a national holiday honoring a WW2 Nazi? Celebrates Nazis? Incorporates Nazis in their military? Uses Nazi insignia on their uniforms? Their secret polices uses Waffen SS as their symbol??

Why shouldn't they be in NATO?

 

I'm going to sidestep the whole "Nazi" thing for a moment and try to focus on one thing -- how Putin could have pulled this whole thing off and actually looked like the 'somewhat-good-guy' out of it!

Between you and me, sure, the ethnic Russians in the Donbas were being crapped on... and they had been crapped on -- brutally at times -- for a very long time. Kiev had reneged on the Minsk Agreements (along with other countries that had acted as 'guarantors'). Kiev was ruled by Ukrainian oligarchs in much the same way that Russia is ruled by Russian oligarchs ('pot' calls 'kettle' black).

So -- when Luhansk and Donetsk each declare independence and set up provisional governments which ask Russia for recognition and protection, it projects to the world an impression (in large part true) that they were breaking away from a tyrannical, overbearing central government in an almost "American-style Declaration of Independence". Very understandable, right? And, thus, it would be understandable that Russia would offer protection to these two new free-states. Very few people would have bitched very much or very long, and there would not have been a gigantic, NATO-wide avalanche of additional sanctions thrown at Russia for their, uh, humanitarian gesture. And it would have been highly unlikely that Sweden and Finland would have been joining NATO on an ASAP basis, either. Are you with me so far?

The Russians could have dug-in, with LOTS of civilian support, on the eastern side of the Dnieper River and waited for the "Kiev-Nazis" to come trooping over from western Ukraine, and it very likely would have been a bloodbath -- but not for the Russians! It's a hell of a lot harder to mount an offense against an entrenched defender than the other way around, Bill. Besides, with the 'theater' being way over on the eastern side of Ukraine, it would have been very difficult, if not almost impossible, for any NATO country to have supplied and resupplied the "Kiev-Nazis" with warfighting materiel! It's 720 kilometers (~450 miles) from Kiev to Donetsk, and even further than that to Luhansk -- a logistics nightmare!

No, Bill... Putin went from "hero to zero" because of the way he executed this whole fugged-up, murderous, destructive strategy, and now he's got trouble... REAL trouble, and even quite a bit more potential trouble if the Chinese decide to let him 'twist in the wind', or even worse, decide to take advantage of his increasingly untenable situation by letting the entire Russian government disintegrate and then seizing Siberia, and the oil fields all the way west to the Caspian Sea. Xi wouldn't need to BUY oil from Russia anymore....

 

Everything east of Dnipro would not work.

After this war there will be no pro-Russian candidates in Ukraine. At all.
