Without a leader to whip our people up the way Putin has been doing in Russia, there will be no will to fight among people in the west until Putin acts first. He knows this and exploits it, but this has its limitations. I wouldn't expect him to touch a NATO member, for instance, no matter what his rhetoric may be.

Any US president calling for a war with Russia would be lambasted as a war monger and people would lose their minds over the thought of a nuclear war with a country that hasn't attacked us first.

You are making a bold assumption that Pootin won’t touch a nato country. Pootin could be making a bold assumption that Americans won’t be willing to risk a nuclear war over Lithuania, Latvia, or Estonia.
I have a 95% certainty that Pootin will attempt hybrid war against a small nato member, like Lithuania. That country’s capital, Vilnius, is just 18 miles from the border with Belarus.
We shouldn’t be waiting for politicians to campaign on the prospect of a nuclear war. We should hit Russia before our next presidential elections. This is a decision that a presidential leadership team should be charged with making. We should hit first. We should hit hard. We should hit now! Every week we wait will result in more deaths on our side. If we wait for Russia to build up force and get ready for a possible nuclear exchange it will be a lot worse!
Added - Biden campaigned on him being a 1 term president. It’s not like he has something to lose politically by hitting first.

The US wants to attack Russia from the territory of Ukraine.
For this reason alone, Washington refused to give written guarantees to Putin that it would not deploy its missiles on Ukrainian territory.

Putin would be stepping on an epic landmine if he attacked a NATO member, but I suppose he could be that deluded at this point.

You know, there really would be nothing to stop us attacking Russia from Ukrainian territory at this point if that were our desire. The Ukrainians would welcome us with open arms.

During USSR time Russians seemed to be more grounded in reality than in Pootins Russia. Pootin might believe his own political slogan that there is no Russia without Pootin. He regularly compares himself to Russian monarchs. He is getting old. He might be willing to risk the nuclear war. He is accountable to no one!
That’s why we should hit Russia before it’s ready to take it and hit back!

From what I understand, it's that kind of rhetoric that helps him remain as popular as he is and avoid being deposed, appealing to Russia's imperial past and comparing himself favorably to beloved past emperors and, of course, the Holy Atheist Stalin.

Unfortunately, I think the West needs to be the better man and wait for Russia to attack a NATO country, before considering retaliation. Or we are no better than they are.

I think the safest way to make the regime fall is through conventional military pressure within Ukraine and sanctions, not military invasion. To some extent Russia actually has been restrained. Even without nukes they could simply bombard the cities and reduce them to rubble. Direct intervention within Russia is too risky!

He probably woke up from a delusional dream that Ukraine is somehow winning. He lost the plot. Anyone calling for a preemptive nuclear strike on Russia has serious issues. Therapy needed.

He just doesn't want to see the mistakes of the 1930s repeated and would prefer to see this century's fascist war machine stopped sooner than later.

Say what you want, but your dear irreplaceable leader just announced to the whole world that Russia is on an imperial conquest mission to reclaim former lands. Some of those lands are NATO countries.
Yes, I think the time has come for us to just nuke Russia and be done with it. If Russians are such cowards that they can’t force their own leaders to play by the rules then we don’t have another choice. If your country can’t peacefully coexist with its neighbors then it should be destroyed. Anything else will just delay the inevitable head-on conflict.

I don't know if they would have the munitions available to do what you say, actually. Considering how much damage they have been doing to cities, I would say they haven't been too restrained, except by available supply and, to a lesser extent, the Ukrainians' ability to repel their assaults.

That's not working out well for the majority of the western population. And things are going to get worse. I expect riots.

I was under the impression that they have a lot of longer distance missiles. Interesting if what you say is true.

    Exactly!
You hear a lot - how come the world didn’t stop Hitler back in the 30’s? Well, we are witnessing exact same dangerous development in Russia with their Pootin! All warning signs are flashing! It’s cheaper and easier to stop Pootin now than 10 years into the future! At this point we are just waiting for things to get worse and for more people to die before our leadership get their collective thumb out of their a$$.

Well, they can't very well use up everything they have just on Ukraine. They would leave themselves with too little military capacity to ensure their own national security, wouldn't they?

The things you talk can come only from an insane person. Luckily US and EU leaders are not so stupid to
start a nuclear war as there would be no winners.

Of course, the response is that no one can see the future. No one knows what Putin will do next. Also, people don't deal well with abstract and hypothetical threats. Americans didn't want to get involved the last time around until America was attacked and the threat of far-away fascism and imperialism suddenly hit home in a very real and literal sense.

The only thing that can save Boris and Olaf is a military coup removing Zelensky and soon. There's going to be a lot of people ousted from power if this war drags into the winter.
