Yes, I know the meaning of Juneteenth but I'm not sure why it deserves a national holiday. I would think that Emancipation Day (Jan 1) would be better or just combine it with MLK Day. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind getting another day off in the Summer but it just seems weird.

I don't have a problem with it if they would call it Emancipation Day. Juneteenth just sounds stupid. And I refuse to say it. My theory is that is how the emancipated talked back in 1865 because they were mostly uneducated. The idea I can celebrate, but the dialect I can't.

It's an old thing that started in Texas in 1867. Today? It's just another flaccid attempt by Democrats to tell Blacks, "Hey, we care and everything... so, have ANOTHER holiday at taxpayer expense!

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER TO VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS! :xd:

Juneteenth is token holiday for Black people. I guess next up is a holiday for Native Americans and then Pacific Islanders.

The United States was long, long overdue for a federal holiday celebrating the end of legalized slavery. It's the single biggest step toward liberty we've ever taken as a nation and it's absurd (and kind of embarrassing) that we didn't have a formal, national commemoration of it.

That day could have been Jan 1 (when the Emancipation Proclamation took effect). It could have been Jan. 31 (when the 13th Amendment passed Congress). It could have been Dec. 6 (when the 13th Amendment was ratified). It could have been June 19, when word of emancipation reached the last slaves in the Confederacy. Or it could have been....there are probably several other reasonable options.

Of the options, "Juneteenth" was the one that was already widely recognized and celebrated at a state and popular level. In fact, nearly every state in the Union already recognized Juneteenth by 2019. It also had the advantage of not [nearly] sharing the day with another major event (e.g. New Year's or Pearl Harbor).

Because folks need to remember how Republican Abraham Lincoln emancipated the democrat owned slaves. Folks also need to know the roots of racism in America and how democrats created racism to justify owning a human being like a farm animal.

And in another few years, they'll discover another mythical holiday they pretended to celebrate their whole lives.

Yes the Democrats should have put them in their place and slapped them down...just as many on this conversation want. There are already too many holidays linked to the emancipation of slaves. Perhaps we could do away with Thanksgiving too as there are very few Puritans left.

???????????? LOL. Yes, this is what the left wants. Let's make statues and holidays to criminals who wouldn't follow simple police instructions. Let's worship the bad guys while trashing law enforcement.

And then maybe one for White people...? Naw, that would be 'insensitive', 'non-inclusive', 'politically-incorrect', and a few other indelicacies that would offend minorities.... :cynic:

It is an interesting thing to examine the history of humanity and assess which races of mankind achieved what in the development, expansion, and sophistication of civilization....

My favorite Black-centric 'holiday' is the Black 'answer' to 'White' Christmas -- "Kwanzaa".

It's described as "a secular festival observed by many African Americans from 26 December to 1 January as a celebration of their cultural heritage and traditional values." It's amazing that the 'woke' mob in Biden's regime hasn't already been raising hell to have "Kwanzaa" declared as a national holiday, too! :hippie:

Watch your mouth. George Floyd is a founding father now. Guess who's birthday is going to replace Columbus Day?

If I understand the current thought on this, July 4th is the Independence Day for white people, and Juneteenth is the Independence Day for black people. Now we need to think of new holidays for all the other nations that occupy the former USA.

Its ok. You don't have to celebrate it. I usually don't even notice when it comes and goes, except that the stock market was closed this year.

Another name for Juneteenth actually is "Black independence day" or "Jubilee day".

Because the only thing of any consequence that blacks have ever produced for the country that justifies a holiday is when white people freed them?

I can see some benefit in making 1/2 the days of the year federal holidays. The less federal government does the better.
