Why do we have such a high crime rate? Because we lock up so many people for petty stuff that often should not even have been brought to trial. Prisons are great schools for how to do crime and get away with it.
Treating people with respect and dignity in the first place and we would not be having such a high crime rate.
If you are poor, you go to jail. If your have enough money you can often buy your way out and walk away.
That is the way our system is set up to work and that's the way it does work.

THAT was actually more vague than your first answer!

Heh, I already gave an answer that works, and you provided nothing.

The high crime rate is because we don't have enough of the animals locked up, we keep letting them out when we should be deporting the scum who keep repeating crimes over and over again.

Define 'petty stuff'; most offenders have to do something pretty violent to get locked up for more than 90 days, or they have previous records as long as your arm.

Why not just deport repeat offenders?

Sure we can, we just need to ignore the whining from assorted deviants and scum and do it. The Founders used deportation as a tool, so can we. Mr Libertarian himself endorsed deportations.

Every society has a right to fix the fundamental principles of its association, and to say to all individuals, that if they contemplate pursuits beyond the limits of these principles and involving dangers which the society chooses to avoid, they must go somewhere else for their exercise; that we want no citizens, and still less ephemeral and pseudo-citizens, on such terms. We may exclude them from our territory, as we do persons infected with disease.

Thomas Jefferson to William H. Crawford, 1816

By providing a supportive environment in other contexts.
There's plenty of stick around. If a child is given opportunities to develop in a supportive environment then they won't become criminals. This means a balance of discipline and support.

If that way if life is all those parents knew themselves as children then that advice isn't going to go too far. Talk talk, blah blah.

Yes, just make it legal for certain demographics who make up half the population to commit any atrocity they want, and wa la, your crime rates fall 90%; it's like, magical, dude ...

Their better outcome isn't a result of their justice policies .. it's a result of a different culture. Until recently Germans were culturally aligned, and shared the Protestant Work Ethic.

    Sure it is.

Undermine the essential fabric of a polite society, and this is what you get. That's pretty derned simple.

Meh. That's what people always say. In the 1960s, the older folks couldn't believe what they were seeing in the younger people, and same has been true every decade. Before that we had segregation and all kinds of barbarism.

Like the thousands of 'social programs' and welfare which didn't exist when crime rates were lower?

I know you're under the weather Melbs, but seriously?

    a smart man once said

    http://eazysmoke.com/marijuana-quotes.htm

"The prestige of government has undoubtedly been lowered considerably by the prohibition law. For nothing is more destructive of respect for the government and the law of the land than passing laws which cannot be enforced. It is an open secret that the dangerous increase of crime in this country is closely connected with this."
