Pelosi finally did her fatal step, the controversial visit to Taiwan.

Don't get me wrong, showing China firmly that we won't accept Taiwan turning into a second Ukraine, is totally OK and threatening with trade instruments, to do so, great.
But humiliating a Chinese government in a far-eastern culture where everything is about pride and not losing face, only makes things worse! And it will force China into action!

By doing so, Pelosi has drastically increased the 2 most frightening risks that are lurking over us:
    1. future military cooperation between hi-tec China and retarded war-hungry Russia. Pelosi might have done the greatest favor ever to Putin!
    2. Increased military unrest around Taiwan, which could lead to a microchip crisis, thus endangering our industry and military innovation.
Let's pray for the best, but if turning out wrong, this will drastically affect the lives of citizens in the USA, EU, and Ukraine.
    Well done, Pelosi!

Consequences will be minimal. Mostly just a show for Xi's domestic propaganda outlets. The communists do not yet have the ability to successfully invade Taiwan (in 2027 they will have 8 divisions of equipped marines but not before) nor do they have enough long range heavy lift helicopters. Heck, they don't even have enough paratroopers.

Maybe Xi might invade a few smaller islands but that would trigger sanctions and China is the most vulnerable enable cou try in the world to sanctions. 80% of energy and 80% of agricultural inputs (fertilizer, pesticides, fungicides, even things like advanced seeds) are imported. With in six months the lights would go out in China and with in a year 500 million Chinese would be dead from starvation.

So, no, Xi will rattle Sabres and make a show then ot to make his military capable of invading but he was already doing that anyway. Sadly, Biden has shown no interest in seriously building up Taiwan military when they really should.

Great post, I think I agree completely, and I liked the added detail you could bring to the table.

Can someone explain to me how we can have a "one China policy" AND "support Taiwan"? Seems like we can't have it both ways?? And if we do have the one China policy, then Taiwan is part of China right? In which case, it occurs to me that China has every right to decide who can visit their country and who can't. In which case, Nancy ought to have skipped this visit. The same as we should reserve that right. I don't know what our policy ought to be, not being a foreign policy expert, but it does seem to me that we can't have it both ways.

Meh. Xi lost this tussle and will just have to suck it up knowing they are no match to US militarily, not that China would even think about starting a war over 'losing face'.

    [Quoting myself from another source:]

"It's been interesting to listen to a number of 'conservative' AM radio talk show hosts comment upon House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's trip to Taiwan.

"That visit established the ability, backed by the strength of the United States of America, for its citizens to travel to countries without interference from another nation.

"The talk show hosts have been having a spot of difficulty in finding something negative to say about it.

    "But they try.

    "They try."

    No.

China is avoiding Russia like the plague and for good reason. Russia can survive a little sanctioned as they are. China would collapse nearly overnight and enter mass starvation if they were sanctioned like Russia.
Or an earthquake could happen . . .

China could try to invade but China sees what is happening in Ukraine and realizes things would not go well for them.

I doubt China would be able to make it to mainland with a single missile Taiwan to do any damage.

    Earthquakes are a greater possibility.

Today everyone can see, where policy "let's do not provoke Russia" went. Someone also wants to take a look, where policy "let's do not provoke China" can go?

    Hi, CKW.

Thank you for taking time to reply to my post.

I can only note what was said by the talk show hosts. I've no magic ball capable of reading their thoughts.

This would have been either started by the Biden administration, or they signed off on it.

Which means we've already got ships headed that way. You can also expect our air force base in Japan to be busy.

No, but I've been seeing Pelosi hate for years.

Usually, it doesn't even make sense, but you know the type..

We are not going to war with the PRC over Taiwan. At its narrowest point, the Taiwan Strait is 79 miles from Mainland China. They can take it whenever they really want it. They can surround it and cut it off before we get anything close to an armadda organised. They just have to want to bad enough to endure some serious sanctions etc. I sorta wish we'd drop with the unrealistic rhetoric and move our current position, to align a little closer with that reality.

I'm guessing everyone is as in the dark as I am as to how we can have a "one China" policy and also support Taiwan independence.

Well, yeah, if it's on her own dime, not paid for by taxpayers. And if she is simply going as a U.S. citizen, not as a "delegation". And if the U.S. is not sending special protection with her that the rest of us wouldn't have. Otherwise, it's our business and the Biden administration would certainly have the right to say no. And given the "one China policy" I think maybe they should have.

No not everyone is in the dark. The “One China” doctrine is wrapped up in a tangled web of geopolitics including internal Chinese politics going back to the Chinese Civil War.

    https://www.csis.org/analysis/what-us-one-china-policy-and-why-does-it-matter

In 1979 when the US recognized the PRC it passed the Taiwan Relations Act as well. The pull quotes below show the US is obligated to defending Taiwan in whatever manner determined appropriate by the Executive and Legislative branches of government. Also that Pelosi has every right to interact with Taiwan independent of my opinion or your opinion.

    https://www.congress.gov/bill/96th-congress/house-bill/2479

I don’t watch the boob tube or read much “news”. But I’m guessing the general confusion on this matter is due to those providing “information” in the media being ignorant or disingenuous.
