Andrew McCarthy nails it... It's not really about those lost classified documents. It's about a big old fishing expedition. That's why it took the FBI so long to search the Trump compound, and why they didn't want anyone around while they sifted and snooped through droves of information. They were looking for the one final nail to lock shut Trump's coffin.

An article worth reading from the beginning. Because of fair use limitations, I quoted the end of the article to stress McCarthy's point.
    ____________________________________________________________________

"The Mar-a-Lago search warrant has been unsealed. Turns out it is what I told you it was going to be: an open-ended license to grab any item that might be relevant to the Justice Department’s Capitol-riot investigation.
"To be sure, the government is very interested in reclaiming every bit of classified information — or, at least, information that it claims is classified — in Donald Trump’s possession at his Mar-a-Lago estate. The warrant, however, is not limited to evidence of classified-information crimes, not even close."

"According to the warrant’s Attachment B, which describes the “property to be seized,” the Justice Department sought (and received) judicial authority to seize evidence of three crimes related to the mishandling of government records: the Espionage Act (Section 793); the concealment, removal, or mutilation of government records (Section 2071); and the obstruction of investigations by altering or destroying evidence (Section 1519)."

(SNIP middle of article and jump to the end)

"The Justice Department is hoping the Trump trove will yield proof that he did not believe his stop-the-steal rhetoric and was willfully trying to steal by fraud and political pressure an election he knew he lost. I believe that is what the Justice Department thinks it needs to charge the former president with corruptly obstructing Congress’s count of state-certified electoral votes, and with conspiring to defraud the government."

Whether they will find the needles in the haystack remains to be seen. But they made sure to get control of the haystack."

If you recall, the Democrats and their obedient echo chamber have been whining about Garland's failure to indict Trump over 1/6.
Garland was feeling the heat, a conspiracy was born, and their fishing expedition began.

Well I'm not going to read the whole thing since NR went full subscription (never go full subscription) but McCarthy has been on most of the Fox shows today. Interestingly, he originally poo pooed the idea that the Southern District of NY would pursue a case just to get Trump since he used to work there. He used to vouch for the integrity of the Justice Department. I notice he doesn't do that anymore.

Yeah, there's a paywall. Sorry 'bout that. I tried to make it as easy to follow and to point as I could in light of the paywall.

    To your point though...
How can he? It's pretty obvious to most, including great legal minds*, the FBI may be covering its own tracks while using the [Presidential Records Act] as a pretext for the Mar-a-Lago search.

*Ben Shapiro, according to what I've read on Twitter, is in full agreement with Andrew McCarthy's op-ed.

So what you’re saying is they got a warrant, and that warrant probably yielded evidence of crimes?
And that’s bad because you think Trump about the law?

Exactly. Trump, like every other president, takes boxes home from the White House. The powers that be knew there was classified info there and yet didn't act as if it needed an immediate response. The boxes sat in Florida gathering dust for a year and a half and all of a sudden, just after the House committee attacks Garland for not doing enough against Trump, Trump's home gets raided and these documents are suddenly a security risk. If Trump was up to something nefarious he wouldn't have had boxes just laying around. He would have sold them to Russia or whomever and disposed of the evidence instead of leaving the boxes laying around gathering dust. As usual, the left are making a mountain out of a mole hill for political purposes.

Was his possession and storage of them in violation of the law?

I didn't realize National Review was still in business. I used to subscribe but they showed they'd rather lose the acknowledge conservatism was evolving. They'd rather play the "good ol' boy" game that fight for conservative principles.

I believe the obstruction charge has something to do with documents withheld during the Mueller investigation and the first impeachment. Documents known to exist but withheld during investigations. No one (investigators) has seen the transcript of the conversation with Zelensky for example.

Try tying this OP and your assertions to ESPIONAGE ACT violations and destruction of National Security Docs or the trail of said docs? IOW, your OP make zero sense as a cogent thoughtful "possibility".

Everything the administration does right now is designed to stop a red wave in November and keep Democrats in control. There's still plenty of time to work on their October surprise. War with China perhaps?

The things everyone seem to be ignoring are
1.why were sensative documents stored and unsecured in the Former President's home...
    2. what is the purpose of them being there?
    3. Why did his lawyer lie about there being more documents...
    4. why didn't he turn all of them over or at least let them be looked at when asked repeatedly to do so...

For those demanding "clarity" on the investigation I think these questions also need to be looked at.
