Well, in my scenario, he would have made it up to prevent people from finding out he was at a gay bar.

But there are literally an infinite number of possibilities.

 

He would accomplish that by simply not telling them he was at a gay bar. He told them the guy was a "republican extremist". Revealing either his political motives if true, or if a lie, because he believed that because of politics, his actions would be viewed more favorably if it was a Republican extremist that he killed.
