Does a person have to prove s/he is a descendant of slaves or can they just identify as such?

I'd imagine you'd have to prove it.

Most African-Americans I know are able to prove their slave ancestry. If they can't, all they'd have to do is complete an AncestryDNA kit.

I'm just curious: Does Bruce Jenner still have his male anatomy? I'm not trying to derail the thread.

If reparations had been paid to the ex-slaves right after they were released from slavery, we wouldn't be having this discussion. The racism of the day didn't want the ex-slaves to have any financial resources, so they'd be at the mercy of their former masters.
So, since it wasn't paid then, it needs to be paid now. African were enslaved for over 200 years, and set free with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
P.S. I will vote for Gavin Newsom in 2024 if he runs for President.

So what happens to those who have mixed heritage? I know some believe in the 'one drop' theory, but does that make them fully eligible even though they also have White ancestry?

How do you detect slavery by DNA? No all the people who came to America from Africa were slaves. How much "slave blood" must one have? What if their great great grandfather was a slave but then gained freedom and became a rich lawyer and the family has been rich ever since?

What about the Irish who also came as slaves and faced discrimination and bigotry in their lives?

I was told: If a person has been living as an African-American for the last 10 years, they qualify for reparations. Oh, and if they have ancestors who were enslaved.

The billions being spent on weapons by USA would be better spent on reparations imo.

The Irish slaves myth is a tactic used by white supremacists on the internet.

An article in the current issue of History Ireland magazine attacks the "slave myth" applied to indentured servants in Barbados in the 17th century. The authors, Liam Hogan, Laura McAtackney and Matthew C Reilly, argue that the distinction between indentured servitude and slavery is not mere semantic quibbling, given the way in which the "Irish slaves" meme has spread virally across the internet in recent years, and the uses to which it has been put.

Hogan says that O’Callaghan (who is no longer alive) was a well-meaning amateur who misread his sources and greatly overstated the numbers of Irish sent to the Caribbean in the Cromwellian period. Just as importantly, he says, the conflation of African perpetual slavery with indentured servitude, where people were legally required to act as servants for a fixed length of time in often brutal and degrading conditions, is inaccurate and misleading. He also makes the point that this narrative has been used to help obscure the fact that many Irish people participated in and profited from slavery

I think what I said was that if it didn't happen before whites become a minority in the US, it won't happen. Of course California has already flipped so this will be an interesting test of my theory. I think they will be bogged down in determining the descendants of slavery.

But hey if I'm wrong, I'll take that lunch!

Wanna see the murder rate for black on black crime to go above 5x where it is? Pass out that money. In a week there’ll be 6 black people left in the whole state.

I wouldn't blame you, if the choice was yours to make. But it would do much more longstanding good, both for the overall black community, as well as for American society, in general, if resources were devoted to fixing the inequities, in our system.

That said, I realize that, after all this time, many are dubious of our government & society having the ability, and the will, to see systemic fixes, all the way through, to the end. Nevertheless, I would anticipate that the alternative of a lot of individual checks, going to people whom it might seem were receiving the benefit, based on their skin color, could only exacerbate racist feelings of whites, towards blacks; it certainly would do nothing to reduce racism, or racial injustice.

California voted for their leaders. If they want to pay for that, sure, knock yourselves out.

This one will be funny to watch because some people that are descendants of slave owners are now black people and some people that are descendants of slaves are not white people.
