While I agree, that freed slaves should have been allowed their mule and 40 acres, I don't think the bolded part of your post, necessarily follows. Even if, logically, it did, it would be an obligation of the FEDERAL, not the STATE government. So, it is hard to tie this back to slavery. Granted, there has been much injustice since the official end of slavery. As I'd said earlier, however, this seems like a reason to address inequities, in the system, for long term remediation. I don't see checks to individuals, as accomplishing that. I fear, however, that is what the trade- off would be. That is, that it will be politically tenable, to do all sorts of things, to aid black businesses, black communities, black education, black families, and black people (as in their treatment, by police), or perhaps it will be possible to send individual checks (though it is still hard for me not to believe there would not be a stiff political backlash, to that). But it is almost assured, that we won't see both.

Given so few people have written evidence of slave ancestry, California will have no choice but to engage in eugenics, or just accept self-identification. Either way it's a legal nightmare - let's hope they feel every bit of that horror. Might finally knock some decency into them.

I honestly can't wait to see how these reparations-happy politicians will determine who is black. For me, that's EVERYTHING. It's going to be the most regressive and awful thing to happen in Western society in generations, and it will be their own fault (for validating the idea of self-identification, and for all their racism).

 

Also, let's see how long it takes for the recipients to claim it's 'not enough', and for those not yet adults to claim their turn, ad infinitum.

Anyone naive enough to think this will be a one off, needs a mental health evaluation. This is just the tip of the iceberg. A corrupt precedent, whose purpose is still a little opaque.

That's why any reparations plan that requires proof of slave ancestry will be a disaster. 23andMe won't cut it, because of the proliferation of black migration to the US after slavery. People who came to the US from the Caribbean or Africa may have been slaves, but not in the US. So likely the actual reparations checks will go to upper middle class and wealthy black families who can afford the extensive genealogical research required. Poor blacks will of course get nothing.

 

If a reparations bill is passed there will be a million lawyers spring up out of nowhere offering to get that cheque for them, with a 20% cut of course but still, that's the pay day descendants will welcome and something lawyers all over the nation will want a chunk of.

Meaning, every man (descendant) and his DOG will be compensated as every slaver and his dog were.

 

That's possible, but it assumes that most of those genealogical searches are successful in order to pay off. But like I said, I support California doing this. It will be a fun experiment.

 

Which is better? CA politicians spending all that revenue on more boondoggles? Or ordinary black Americans living in CA spending it to meet their needs?

Easy choice -- give it to the black Americans suffering under CA's Big Bad Government. Then double it.

Yep. And then of course they'll become a victim sub-group, who will demand reparations for the reparations they didn't get. Again, these are all tips of a yuge iceberg. The self-identity thing is a precedent they've already set, so legally they will have to acknowledge it. Failure to recognise the Rachel Dolezals will mean discrimination - yet another leverage point for further reparations.

I can't wait to see this explode in their smug faces. The level of vain stupidity (or evil, if it's intentional) involved deserves nothing less.
