It is going to take time to get Abrams into condition where they can legally be exported. The deplete uranium armor will have to be removed (like what happened to the Abrams sent to the Iraqi Army) as will top secret communications, GDP, and battlefield awareness integration electronics, even some of the internal electronics will need to be changed out. The best options might be to upgrade only M1A1s instead of more.modern varients. Also all new tank support and sustain ment facilities will need to be built in Europe as none currently exist in Europe. We are talking half a year to a year before Abrams can show up in Ukraine.

I would suggest sending more modern versions to Poland, maybe 200 to go with the existing 100 training tanks already in Poland, so Poles and Ukrainians can train on starting next month, then have Poland send all of its remaining PT-91 varients (upgraded T-72 tanks). Add in Leopards and Ukraine will have an offensive force for spring, Poland will still have tanks to defend itself with, and training for Abrams can at least get started.

 

The success of the Javelin against Russian armor presents the question of whether Tanks have become obsolete in modern warfare. Do the Russians have a weapon similar to the javelin? If so I wouldn't want to be in a rolling target.

 

Wow! If the FSB is starting to come on like the old Gestapo in Nazi Germany then, if this Ukraine war doesn't come to a conclusion pretty soon, those insurrections you mention may actually be inside Russia, in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Chelyabinsk, and others.

If the Russians had been smart, they'd have simply 'recognized' the Donbas provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent 'countries', moved troops in to defend them (at the request of these provinces, of course ), and then fortified those positions -- and doing essentially nothing else... and no big World War II-style "invasion" by Russia! The rest of Europe would have bitched and belly-ached, more or less like it did when Putin took Crimea in 2014... but, in a few months the whole thing would have faded back into "page two" news. Europeans would have gotten Nord Stream 2 with Russia turned on, abundant, cheap natural gas would have flowed, and everybody would have been as happy as pigs in sh!t within a year.

Now that possibility is gone for good, and among the predictions I've read that seem more and more plausible are those that envision the breakup of Russia into three or four separate countries -- and -- that the Chinese will take advantage of the situation by grabbing a large chunk of Siberia east of the Ural Mountains, as well as all the oil and gas fields in western Asia, all the way west to Azerbaijan! Think: with Russia falling apart, who would stop the Chinese from doing that?

 

There have been anti-tank weapons of this kind for a very long time. No, tanks are not obsolete. They just need sufficient protection against such weapons. Even with Javelins and other such weapons in use, tanks are still playing a significant role in Ukraine.

 

What about the Ukrainian air defence forces - eqipped with the best air defence that the West can produce?

I do not think he was a white supremacist, rather a person who was proud that he was German and Germans was a great nation. I did not say that I liked him very much, but I was fine with his point of view on different things.

The Kornet has been used by the Russians since 1998. The Kornet is portable but not shoulder-fired like the Javelin and requires a two-soldier team.
