If it really matters, then it always matters.

Erdogan didn't want them to join NATO ever, and was looking for an excuse. Let's not pretend that he was all for them joining NATO and suddenly got so offended that he changed his mind.

Protection of free speech should have always been a requirement to join NATO.

I know we couldn't change it now because Turkey would veto it, but it should have been a requirement.

Quit talking to me por favor .. There is no point in talking to people who's only game is to build strawmen .. who do nothing but misrepresent your position or make up some position and pretend the other holds that position. Keep the fantasy psycho drama you got going on to yourself mate ..

congrats, an article more than 10 years old. It's also a thing that NATO needs Turkey more than the other way around. They are next to Russia and able to block their port. They are also next to the middle east. Their air force is also just massive.

You put up that the Turks are buying Russian oil.
I put up why it makes sense out of a Turkish perspective.
And all you got going is a personal drama rant from you. lol

Personally I think a lot of Quran should burn. Might help the totaltarian world get used to simple freedoms.

In the end I expect Turkey will come around or -- a real possibility -- be swapped out of NATO to bring Finland and Sweden in.

NATO needs Turkey, but not more than Turkey needs NATO.

Not so much that Turkey couldn't live without NATO, but if Turkey was not in NATO, it would be an enemy of NATO, and that would be terrible for Turkey.

Oh noes. Turkey could be neutral like most of the world.
And your idea that all of NATO is on the same level of 1 country, is telling to how strong their position actually is.

    And all in all.
Nazi's burning their religious books while trying to be part of the club with Turkey, is like your wife yelling profanity at your neighbor. And you'd be like, hey man free speech and can I borrow the lawnmower? Have a wild guess what is not going to happen....

It seems people have this mild shock when hearing that Turkey is not up to have friends like that with some weird privileged neo-colonial train of thought.

It's not just free speech. Sweden also has harbored people who've been branded as terrorists for -as far as I know- decades by Turkey and predates Erdogan. This would have always been a massive problem.

I'm sure there are quite a few Kurds in the US that Erdogan would want dead too.

I could just replace NATO with the US.

If Turkey wasn't in NATO, the US would probably already have them under sanctions, and their economy would have collapsed decades ago instead of just being on the brink of collapse now.

I'm not a nationalist type, but the US military is miles ahead of anything else on earth.

We are still so much stronger than everyone else, that we can get what we want without even having to use it against any country with a mentally stable leader.

The whole neighborhood didn’t yell at the guy with profanity just like all of Sweden didn’t participate in burning the book.

It was done by a political leader (a convicted racist) with his followers.
And under the guise of... I'm just burning a book and that's not racist, he and his fellow nazi's use that send a message to the Turkish people.

Why do you believe Santa Claus is real?

I hate to be the first to point this out to you as well, but Santa Claus is not real.

Did you know that Santa Claus is an anagram of Satan Lucifer.

So kids in the west actually are conditioned to worship the devil from a young age

Turkey agrees to start process for Finland's NATO membership, Erdogan says

From CNN's Amy Cassidy and Yusuf Gezer

Turkey has decided to start the process of ratifying Finland's accession to NATO, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a news conference in Ankara Friday.

"We have decided to start the parliamentary ratification process of Finland's NATO Accession Protocol," Erdogan said.

Finland — along with Sweden — both announced their intention to join NATO in May, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused a sudden shift in attitudes toward joining the bloc.

Erdogan said he believes NATO "will become even stronger through Finland's membership" and "will play a more efficient role in preserving global security and stability."

"With the completion of the ratification process, our relationships with Finland will be fortified on the grounds of NATO Alliance," he said.
