not all the cars can be updated in that list on the website, free or not, that is the point - if one was lucky enough that the car supported both 3g and 4g, then a software update may allow them to use 4g, they are the lucky ones

many kindles used free 3g too, that no longer works, it's just an issue we will face with built in cloud devices going forward

    Well, yikes!!

I'd say that is even worse than demanding a subscription! It's killing a feature that was sold as part of the car.

and due to the DMCA, hacking around it, to bypass it, would be a crime

in fact, if car makers add a digital lock to the hood, it would be a crime for the owner to open it

That would be an outstandingly embarrassing prosecution if there ever was one.

I know manufacturers hate having people hack their cars when they are under warranty. But, usually it just voids the warranty.

If the "crime" is to make a feature work when the company won't do so, it seems more than perverse.

if they make their money from monthly subscriptions fees, they could get the lawyers involved

    I fully agree in principle.

However, I was thinking that your scenario involved connectivity no longer existed and without there being a solution by the manufacturer.

So, they didn't really have a subscription to offer for sale.

Of course, I may not have interpreted this problem correctly.

well, all your subscriptions would stop working too I assume, or one could damage the network and never pay for them again - as it could not call home to check if the status changed, my guess is if no check in after a certain amount of time, these features get disabled

    Great cartoon.
Let's Face It: Net Zero Is Dead In The Water
    January 30, 2023/ Francis Menton
    [IMG]

    • The headline comes today from Dr. Benny Peiser’s newsletter for the Global Warming Policy Foundation’s New Zero Watch project. (If you don’t subscribe to this newsletter, you should. Go to this link to sign up. As with MC, there is no charge.)

    • This latest newsletter contains a roundup of articles from just the last couple of days reporting on the ongoing disaster of the Net Zero fantasy. In this post, I’ll just cover some of the highlights.

    • But first, can somebody please let President Biden in on this news, or at least some of it?

    • Even as the impossible dream of a wind/solar-powered economy collapses everywhere it is tried, the U.S. federal government blindly pushes forward with hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer funds to subsidize wind and solar generation and battery storage.

One of Tesla’s biggest critics is funding a Super Bowl ad against it
Dan O'Dowd has spent millions publicizing mistakes made by Tesla's Full Self-Driving tech. Now he's doubling down with a Super Bowl ad aimed at politicians.
By Gerrit De Vynck and Faiz Siddiqui

SAN FRANCISCO — Electric carmaker Tesla is facing multiple challenges and distractions right now. This Super Bowl Sunday it will get another one, shown to audiences across the country.

California tech entrepreneur Dan O’Dowd, who has already poured millions of his own money into a campaign to get Tesla’s Full Self-Driving tech banned from public roads, is funding a Super Bowl commercial that will play in D.C. and a handful of state capitals, including Austin, Tallahassee, Albany, Atlanta and Sacramento. . . .

Seems our nation decided to give Elon musk welfare. They decided to give incentives for buying electric cars. This means the car company can raise the price to eat up the incentive meaning it's just a kick back for a guy that spent 44 billion to buy Twitter.

you think the only breakdowns are someone runs out of gas in a ICE car

even something as simple as water in the gas line freezes, you're out of commission for a bit

if your alternator goes out, most modern ICE cars not going far after that

It is of no use in an engine that does not start. Just saying...

It IS price war, and its not illegal or wrong. Tesla is in position to do it, so they are doing it. I would do the same thing.
