Trump, newly charged, urges defunding Justice Department and FBI

Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday called on his fellow Republicans in Congress to slash funding for the U.S. Justice Department and the FBI, one day after pleading not guilty in New York to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.

Trump, who is seeking to regain the presidency in 2024, took aim at federal law enforcement authorities even though the criminal charges against him - the first brought against any former or sitting president - were pursued not by them but by the Manhattan district attorney.

But Trump faces two Justice Department criminal investigations led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. Both have seemed to accelerate in recent months.

"REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS SHOULD DEFUND THE DOJ AND FBI UNTIL THEY COME TO THEIR SENSES," Trump wrote on his social media platform. DOJ stands for the Department of Justice.

Trump is using the same tactics as every criminal autocrat who has walked this world.

Attack the credibility of the authorities investigating these criminal actions and eventually, if by some misfortune he were to return to power, he will put elements in charge of the DOJ and FBI that are devoted to him and will let him do whatever he wants.

Recall that in 2020 all DOJ lawyers threatened to resign en bloc when Trump wanted to institute martial law to seize voting machines and overturn the election.

Never in US history has a politician been more dangerous than Donald Trump.

I think bipartisan people need to be imbedded in the DOJ and FBI and observe in real time how decisions are made and what they’re based on. Then they can report to Congress on a regular basis what they find. Did we ever find out what the insurance policy was?

BLM's 'crime' was in picking the all time worst slogan in the history of American politics, to describe a 21st century law enforcement model for policing our cities. Trump's crimes were a little more concrete. You have his motive spot on.

They have been perpetuating the Russia Hoax for 7 years, they refused to investigate Biden or any of the Biden crime family, they gave Jeffrey Epstein and his merry band of perverts a pass for decades, they had foreknowledge and involvement in the first WTC Bombing, they had foreknowledge and involvement in the OKC Bombing, on and on...

There is a group of people, headed by Trump at the moment, who prefer autocratic rule.
This is the most un- American group of Americans I've seen in my 61 years.
They have the right to think as they please ............for now!
People who agree with this should just start by sitting down for the national anthem.

While the majority of federal government should be defunded, the justice department is one of the few enumerated powers in the constitution. He is barking up the wrong tree because he was indicted.

Who has the double standard, the GOP that has used as part of its platform not to defund law enforcement but will still follow Trump and agree with them to defend the FBI and DOJ for purely political reasons? Or the left that is trying to use the police in ways that do not necessarily means having a foot beat cop on every corner of the city?

Most of the arguments involving the police through the BLM really were about using the police the right way. Today, the GOP thinks the police can do it all, psychologists, sociologists, guidance counselors, government enforcers, patrol officers, combat medics, and platoon leaders all in one. As the former Dallas Police Chief said, the government is putting too much on the plate of officers right now and needs to reevaluate whether or not that is a good thing. But for me personally, I do think the police need to have more community policing activites and some conservatives here on this forum call that "defunding the police." Go figure.

 

True, no one listened to the arguments, just the slogan and misused it against BLM. But if you really listen to BLM, their main goal was police accountability and more transparency, better policing tactics, and not be the bullhorn physically when politicians get scared. I understood their argument, especially when police have to deal with a person who has severe mental issues and is acting in a threatening way. Which was being broadcasted a lot by media in the poorest light, among other things.
