I do think a line has been crossed by President Trump, but the fact of the matter is the United States government no longer has the moral authority to defend it's own system due to decades of influence peddling for profit, propogandizing, and sensationalism for the sake of creating fervor to donate, and vote.

It has made it acceptable for citizens to stripped of their rights, including a trial by an arbitrary designation from the executive branch. It has made it acceptable for surveillance to be conducted against citizens even presidential candidates requiring no more than a prosecutors say so essentially. It fawns over organizations of oligarchs who can meet to plan how to preserve and expand their influence, and shows no support to laborers that wish to do the same.

It can and does enforce the law differently for different people, and has now abandoned all pretense otherwise.

So now you've got an old fashioned firebrand wielding some real political power. That special kind of political power where a leader has a large number of people who honestly love him no matter what, and he's basically daring them to come at him. Hell just today the man tossed out that the DA about to indict him in Georgia was banging a gang leader she was investigating..
