Wow, what a great country this would be if everyone who was hungry, or needed more drugs, could just steal them from innocent people. You want to address the issue of poverty fine, but to infer that stealing is legally justifiable is just absurd. There are food banks, and soup kitchens, in almost every city and town in this country.

3 strike rules are dumb. But our system is terrible for rehabilitation. We realy should take a hard look at our system and find a way to make these people productive.

The more I see what China is doing, the weaker that claim becomes.
The future now belongs to Asia, and China in particular.
If you see what they are doing, economically, scientifically, geopolitically, environmentally and socially, you realize that they are creating a future for themselves that will quickly dominate the globe.

Meanwhile, we here in the US and the west are at each other's throats and wallowing in self-centered, selfish individualism while we spout gibberish about freedoms and liberties and we destroy our economic health by mismanagement and greed and lack of political and social cohesion.

Any young person who wants to survive in the world of the future better learn how to speak Mandarin.

No kidding! He was looking for anything to steal. My Church has a soup kitchen every Wednesday with a give away table with multi item bags. Guys like this usually escalate to violence at some point. Better to lock 'em up before they hurt someone.

Yea, the shame. It's much better to allow criminals on the streets so they can "contribute" to society in their own way.

Why does anyone feel the need to bump a thread almost 1 1/2 years old, to add nothing of substance to it?

    *sigh*

I agree. The crack heads not only stimulate the sale of consumer goods, gun sales, security systems, etc, but they help drive up insurance premiums. They also create a lot of law dog jobs too, , but we could eliminate those.

A poor misunderstood crack head needs a minimum of $100 every day just for crack so they have to steal $400 + worth of stuff or the crack whores can trade their bodies for their crack money. I can see why a crack head would steal to get crack but I'm not sure crack heads steal food that often.

I wonder if this guy is back in jail or dead??

So, this was a criminal with 2 strikes against him, already. He stupidly tried to break into a church. 3 strikes, you're out! He knew that in advance.

Don't feel too bad for him. He got 3 square meals and free room and board for his crimes. Sounds like that is more than he would have gotten on the street.

I think Letting him free is worse, but the country can not afford to rehabilitate crackheads at the cost of 50k per head.

Wow, the former CEO of Worldcom, Ebbers, stole over a billion and he also got 25 years. Do anyone think he knew what he was doing was wrong? Some justice system we have here.

    Peoplevsmedia:

This is a perfect example of wrong headed thinking where morality gets confused with economics.

You don't want to spend $50k on rehabilitation. You don't want to see this guy cleaned up, fed, his medical needs seen to and whatever therapy, support and training he needs to straighten up and fly right and hold down a job and earn his own living. You don't want to see this because nobody did it for you and in your mind, the guy doesn't deserve anyones help. But this is strictly a moral position.

The hard economic facts are that this guy is going to live in jail for maybe another Twenty or Thirty years, costing you what? $30K per year? Thats $600,000 to $900,000 of your tax dollars going up in smoke! Then of course you have also foregone the tax revenue he would have paid if he worked a job. Then we have the contribution to national GDP his paychecks provide.

Do you now understand what a rotten investment proposition shoving people into jail is?

Do you now understand why all those "socialist" European countries, especially Scandinavian countries, spend huge amounts of taxpayer money on kindergartens, and primary and secondary education to give all kids the best possible start in life?

    It's about economics not morality!

This guy has a treatable disease. It would appear he is so consumed by his disease that he is not trying to get treated. I think after being arrested the first time, he should have been forced in to a treatment center, then the other two robbery's would most likely not have happened. Its a win/win, tax payer isn't paying for his care for 25 years, and his life is greatly improved.

You're right, if you can answer this next question accurately and in the affirmative:
When he broke into the place, was it actually because he was hungry?

Well, you're wrong about the U.S., that is.

    Yes it is.
Unless of course, there were severely extenuating circumstances.

Correct...we have members of congress still serving who have committed greater crimes than this guy. The scales of justice are skewed and need correcting. Couldn't agree more.

    OP:

Anti-American at every opportunity. How intellectually dishonest to attempt to attach meaning to the greatness of a country because of one event which took place within it.

If that was the case, the Australia would be reviled on all the Earth regarding their treatment of aboriginals.
