I'm perfectly comfortable with a portion of my 'income' being used for 'the betterment of all', since I am part of the 'all' that is bettered by it! As long as everyone is also paying their share, and everyone is recieiving the benefit of it in infrastructure and services, that's fine.

If the rate is 70%, though, that is simply higher than should ever be necessary (with the possible exception of a time of a real war of survival, which creates obvious additional costs that need to be met for the benefit of all, including me!). If everyone is paying there proper share, and nobody is getting a 'free ride' (apart from those in genuine need, of course), then income tax shouldn't need to be anything like that high.

Of course, there are current social issues to be resoved before all that is exactly as it should be, and there is some investment required to make that happen, but even with the current problems a tax rate that high means that somebody somewhere has got their sums badly wrong! That kind of tax burden would simply be unsustainable, as well as being unfair.

I don't know you, don't know your work ethic, and could care less.

In no where did I " disparage" you in my statement. Speaking as a person who works just as hard as you, giving up a big portion of my check does matter.

Does that make you feel better about your idiotic original statement.

Even if all of the middle class gave up 70& of their paychecks, there would still not be enough money to pay off the governments bills. And we all know that the CEO's and corporations have the government bought and paid for, so they would not be paying more along aside the middle and lower classes.

Bull. You suggested that because I'm okay with contributing to taxes, I must not work hard for a living. It's crap. It's weak. And it's entirely too common a tactic.

WTF is wrong with you liberals?

How the (*)(*)(*)(*) are you going to eat, drive to work, recreate and have any money left over to (*)(*)(*)(*)ing spend ON YOURSELF if you give away 3/4ths of it to the Government?

Why do you want to be poor and broke? WHY? Someone please tell me!

I've been poor and broke. It is NOT FUN.

How are you going to buy school clothes for your kids every year? How will you pay your electric bills? I mean really, are you liberals so (*)(*)(*)(*)ing rich that you can afford to lose 70% of your pay and still live a high quality of life?

I (*)(*)(*)(*) you not, if I lost 70%, or even 50% of my paycheck, I would (*)(*)(*)(*)ing starve to death. I want to know how the (*)(*)(*)(*) you people can afford to lose 70% of your paycheck and your kids not go around in rags.

How do you make a car payment, mortgage payment, etc with no (*)(*)(*)(*)ing money?

I think you all are a bunch of dirty liars, no body on this forum is so rich that they can afford to lose 70% of their paycheck to taxes and still pay their bills. You are (*)(*)(*)(*)ing liars.

Keep in mind that most of the ones who are advocating the socialist idea of paying 70%+ of their paycheck to go to "government this" and "government that" either don't have a job to begin or they make very little. Either way, they are dependent on Government for their existence and are currently drains on society. They are subsidized by the productive people in society, and they want those people to bleed even more for them.

So who are they? Those who support a 70% tax? I count one on this thread and I very much doubt he is a net taker from the State.

I support high and effective taxation if it delivers. I think 70% would be poor value for money, but a marginal rate of 40-50% would be fine. I would venture to say that I am far more economically successful than 98% of the right wing troglodytes that post here. I am not as economically successful as someone like Bill Gates, who is responsible for a massive part fo US innovation recently, who would also support high taxes, or Warren Buffet either.

You can't have it both ways. If we are all East Coast educated types in bed with the corporations then guess what - we already pay more taxes than you because we have got all the best jobs while you honest merkuns sit in your trailers bemoaning the corporatist elite that persecutes you.

Noone supports 70%. Nice strawman to have a go at *******s, but pretty juvenile really. The marginal rate of tax (know what that is?) in the USA already does approach 50% for some well paid Americans. They are not emigrating. Get over it.

You don't seem to get it. Now that unions got their way, the State will either raise taxes on all of us, the local Governments we live in will raise taxes on all of us.

People who I don't even know just voted to cut my pay and give it to someone who makes more money than me.

Tell me why I shouldn't be pissed?

These are direct taxes, supported by right wing conservatives as the best way to tax because you pay on what you consume and not what you earn. Liberals want to replace these with income taxes which proportionately hit the rich harder. Conservatives prefer sales taxes.

Oh, apart from the new conservatives who prefer no taxes...no gubmint...and live in the hills.

Yeah that's what Bush did with his tax cuts. He cut taxes to the rich as the poor pay more income and consumption taxes.

You know you have a vote. I wouldn't vote for anyone who wanted to raise taxes to 70%. Government has to cut its cloth.

Considering that many Americans pay European rates of tax, you get remarkably poor value for that. Germans get free or subsidized higher education, apprenticeships, early retirement, great healthcare...and you get to bomb a lot of places. Your rich don't pay their share as the rich in Europe do. And yet Germany is a highly successful innovative industrial country where millionnaires are doing just fine and don't even have to step over the hobos in the street that they live in.

I would estimate that much of your public sector is inefficient and driven by an entitlement culture. But probably Bill Clinton was the last politician who really tried to tackle that.

well look at the expenses, if government provided housing there would be no mortgage payments, same with subsidies to energy costs, health care, food, even transportation, those tax dollars will fix infrastructure for more light rail and public transports.

government can meet most of our needs but we must trust in them and stop believing the lies of media sponsored corporations

Why do you doubt that? Most of the liberals who make a good living are not personally willing to pay such ridiculous taxes. The ones advocating for these punitive levels of taxation have very little skin in the game, and want to see other people suffer in order to get freebies. My statement is closer to reality than yours.

Good for you, I'm glad our capitalistic system worked out for you. Warren Buffet should pay the taxes he already owes before begging to be taxed more.

Typical liberal scumbaggery and arrogance, right here. Hard to believe someone who resorts to such childish stereotypes and insults can be so economically successful.

I was about to say something similar. If sales taxes are taking that high a percentage of a person's income, then that person is likely to be one who is very poorly paid. That's the way that consumption taxes work - the same actual amount of tax is charged for someone buying the same produce, whether they earn 1 dollar or 1,000,000 dollars. Tax is then a higher proportion of the wages of a less well off person, which makes it inherently unfair - the less a person is paid, the higher percentage of tax they are paying. Income tax is simply a much, much fairer system of gathering tax - people pay a percentage of what they earn, so those who can afford most actually pay most, instead of paying proportionally (as a part of their income) least.

Ok lets be clearer. The statement that most liberals want anyone to pay 70% income tax is a lie. That easy enough for you to follow?

Wow you give up easily. Did I hit a nerve there? Did you think that your chilish gratuitous abuse of liberals as streetbums should get a free pass? Methinks you sound like one who is quite willing to give it out but can't take it back in return. Why is that so common a feature of the Right?

You can believe what you like but it stands to reason that all us educated liberals who run big corporations and the gubmint are pretty highly paid. You can't have it both ways buddy - what are we, the liberal elite screwing the ordinary Joe or a bunch of soclially marginalized welfare claimants?

Me personally, I'm the liberal elite. You know I don't know how so many of you hard working poorly paid conservatives survive? You work hard and you get nowhere apaprently as we colllge educated types conspire to exploit you. I work hard and hey, I'm pretty close to being a self made millionnaire.... even after taxes.

The HIGHEST proposal to tax the rich is 39.5% on their HIGHEST income over $250,000. Their lower income will be taxed at the exactly same rate as the poor.

    That does not = "bejesus".

But that 39.5% is not the only taxation. Remember we have 50 States who also take thier share, and each local community takes it's share as well.

That "39.5" rate may not seem like much, but when you add in the other taxation, that rate skyrockets to 50% of ones income!

We're already taking 50% of the richest people income in most areas of the country. What the Federal Government doesn't take, the individual States and localities most certainly do.

Taxation in America is not a "one size fits all thing" there are wild regional discrepancies built into the system thanks to the setup of our federalized Government system.

Where in Germany there is one tax rate for all of the people, in America there are 3. Federal, then State, then Local.

Federal Taxes should be as low as possible, this will force individual States to make up the shortfall in the way they tax their own citizens. We need to return to a model based in Federalism, where individual States take up the burden of taxation individually, rather than someone in Alabama being taxed to support the infrastructure and social needs of New York.

If Alabama wants to live in relative 3rd world conditions because it's people do not want to pay the taxation for infrastructure, then that should be their decision and busybody progressives in other states should stop trying to use national action to bring the level of infrastructure in Alabama up to the level of say New York or vice versa. They should mind their own business, and worry about their own localities, etc.

Social justice should be a State by State administered thing. The only thing the Federal Government should be doing, is regulating, as intended by the founding fathers, externalities that bleed across State lines(such as pollution of water supplies or other environmental factors or violations of civil rights granted by the Constitution).

Well fact is we need to take 55% of their income. 74% of America also thinks so.

We used to have a term for when someone took 50% of someones income. Sharecropping.

Why would anyone want to agree to be a sharecropper for the State? Isn't that the near equivalent of slavery?

If that 74% were explained to properly that they were taking 55% of a persons income between Federal State and local taxes, they would change their minds I believe but the liberals intentionally omit these facts.
