Excellent OP, and I must say I find this to be a very interesting current event.

However, gestures such as these have different meanings all over the world. In Great Britain, you would not raise the middle finger (although that may have changed with our infectious American culture) but rather you would give what would best be described as a backwards peace sign, indicating that you are an archer whose fingers were not cut off.

I digress, of course, so let's look at the middle finger gesture in Russia.

It would appear that would not be the gesture one would use.

In Italy, Poland, and countries under the influence of Russian culture (Russia, Belarus, Ukraine), the bent elbow insult is equivalent to The Finger.

Its equivelent to the "finger" here too. But the bird in Russia is the same as the bird here. ;)

If one reads the article though, it would seem possible that she first thought she was not on camera, and second was actually sending a message to those behind the camera who were evidently trying to mess with her in some way. It seems plausible, and makes more sense than her in some way flipping off Obama, which does not make much sense.

    It is funny though :)

In Russia the middle finger actually means "victory".

Can be used literally or sarcastically.

I think if someone is going to make an obscene gesture so that we would understand exactly what they were doing, they'd use the gesture we are most familiar with --- don't you?

I would think if it was meant for us it would be in English as well.
