here is a part I do not understand: the men are desperate for women to marry - so why would they not take a bride with no dowry? Why would they rather pay for a woman bought from another country? It doesn't make any sense now that they ratio of women available is so low.

Comparatively easy to do with the Asian average slighter male builds, "women" of this sort for both sex tourism and brides from the Philippines, Thailand, China, and other countries are very popular. Many American men seem to prefer the female-looking but genitally male version. It would be interesting to have followed Rush Limbaugh around on his Philippine sex trips (the ones where he is busted with a suitcase full of leftover Viagra on the way back).
