I wrote this to Southpaw related to the state of the forum folder. He seems to think that there will be a staff discussion of issues. So I am planting this in your mind as I did for his. Mostly to see if it makes any contribution to any future discussion:

So for your real discussion, I think one key issue to consider is this: Is racist, sexist and heterosexist content allowed or not? Yes or No.

It almost seems that the current Forum stance is yes, it is. It is freedom of speech as long as there is no personal attack involved or as long as it is not blatant, outright hate speech. I would like to see you address that as a group.

And I would like for you to discuss even the enforcement of the hate speech thing. I think moderators do a good job of addressing the issue when it is reported. So I do think that members should have responsibility for reporting what they feel to be offenses.

But sorry, I also think that some moderators participate and tolerate the hate speech. Meaning sometimes, moderators or advisors are active participants in the folder where it really is not reasonable to believe that the hate speech was not observed and passed over. It's not always about staff missing the content...though that is clearly an issue. What does it mean when moderators see and overlook it? I think you all should have a private conversation amongst yourselves about that...one that should not be reported back to the group.

Best wishes on your next steps. I think this is too much work for volunteers. So I am amazed and impressed that folks would even attempt it. It's much easier to just run things as you see fit and let folks deal with it. Though I am sure that is challenging too.
