Three serious research efforts have put numerical weight — yes, data-driven evidence — behind what many suspected all along: Americans who relied on Fox News, or similar right-wing sources, were duped as the coronavirus began its deadly spread.”

“The studies “paint a picture of a media ecosystem that amplifies misinformation, entertains conspiracy theories and discourages audiences from taking concrete steps to protect themselves and others”

“Those who relied on mainstream sources — the network evening newscasts or national newspapers that President Trump constantly blasts as “fake news” — got an accurate assessment of the pandemic’s risks. Those were the news consumers who were more likely to respond accordingly, protecting themselves and others against the disease that has now killed more than 123,000 in the United States with no end in sight.”

“Those who relied on Fox or, say, radio personality Rush Limbaugh, came to believe that vitamin C was a possible remedy, that the Chinese government created the virus in a lab, and that government health agencies were exaggerating the dangers in the hopes of damaging Trump politically”

“Beyond the risks the general public faces from consuming this nonsense and misinformation, there’s the fact that the president himself has been picking up these same ideas and using them to steer policy. Instead of tapping experts in the medical and scientific community — many of whom are on the government payroll — he has chosen to educate himself by watching right-wing news outlets.“

“The upshot was clear: For too long, many devotees of most right-wing news decided they didn’t need to stay home. Others absorbed the idea that wearing a protective mask was an act of left-leaning partisanship.”

“And so, it’s tragic — but again not all that surprising — to see the virus spiking now in red states where governors and other public officials joined Trump and his favorite news outlets early on in downplaying the dangers.“

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifes...74a_story.html

So, is it a valid point, that millions of Americans watching Fox and listening to right wing radio downplaying the seriousness of the coronavirus were led to believe an alternative set of realities that has led to the situation we confront today with the virus spreading rapidly in the South and Southwest?

    No kidding!!

There are reasons why the US is doing so poorly with covid relative to the rest of the Western world, and why we are leading the death count. Fox News is one of those reasons. Unfortunately, those Fox news viewers will only wake up when one of their own relatives or friends dies from the virus. Until then, they'll think it is fake news or a Dem hoax.

Oh no, you are not going to show us yet again both individuals in late January talking about cinco de mayo again are you?

Difference is they were following the Trump Administration guidelines at the time, which they quickly changed in February, Fox, led by Trump, maintained the downplaying into March, and then resumed it again in May

Those looking for the government to tell them what to do to avoid a virus should wear a helmet 24/7. Dems and their BS were as bad or worse.

Why do you hate Fauci so badly?

Could you link to this research as the Post has it hidden behind a paywall.. Or do you just want people discussing a headline?

Even Brinxs admitted during one of the briefings that many times anything even resembling Covid would count as a "Covid death".. You could blow your brains out and it would count.

You as a scientist should know how you count something factors into it...

While I understand the error, Fox is not actually the govt. but I get it, you don’t watch news or listen to govt experts on anything. I guess you’re an expert in every field or just get your info off of bathroom walls?

    Fox; Pro-Trump, anti-science

    CNN; Pro-science, anti-Trump

In reference to Covid19, how many times Trump has been right?

Trump fans have yet to show direct evidence for their constant slandering of doctors and hospitals, by claiming that they fraudulently over-count covid deaths for financial gain.

Trump shutdown travel from China on January 31st & Biden called Trump xenophobic & CNN agreed

April 3rd Biden finally admitted the travel restrictions were a good idea.

    LOL!

Let's see where Trump was right:

Only 15 cases, soon down to zero - Nope
Chlorquine a promising treatment - Nope
Covid coverage a Dem hoax -Nope
We have it totally under control -Nope
By April, when it gets warmer, it will miraculously go away - Nope
Anybody who wants a test can get a test -Nope
We'll reopen for Easter - Nope
    Liberate Michigan - Oh boy
Partial travel ban from Wuhan -Check

So, you can't say he was batting zero, but a broken clock is also right once a day.

    So what?

Biden is not the POTUS, Trump IS.

Trump dropped the ball on this.

Trump FAILED in his response to COVID.

His supporters need to come to grips with that FACT.:salute:

    https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/excess_deaths.htm

You make it seem like the official number is factual even the CDC does not know for sure.

    For example

Table 4 shows the types of health conditions and contributing causes mentioned in conjunction with deaths involving coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). For 7% of the deaths, COVID-19 was the only cause mentioned. For deaths with conditions or causes in addition to COVID-19, on average, there were 2.5 additional conditions or causes per death. The number of deaths with each condition or cause is shown for all deaths and by age groups. For data on comorbidity,

Well of course not . Why would Fox want Truth, Honesty and the American way. Not that de Blasio is a genius but still way more honest than Shaun Vannity.

As far as I know, excess deaths are a way to estimate the TRUE covid death toll. They are, however, not counted as official covid deaths. You need a positive covid test to be included in that category. I am open to your arguments, should you have evidence showing otherwise.

No, they didn't. If people can't think for themselves it's on them, not a news outlet.
