"(CNN)The White House on Monday said that CNN correspondent Jim Acosta's press pass has been "restored," bowing to days of pressure and a federal lawsuit against the administration.

"In response, CNN said in a court filing that it has dropped the ongoing litigation over Acosta's access to the White House.

"Today the White House fully restored Jim Acosta's press pass. As a result, our lawsuit is no longer necessary," the network said in a statement. "We look forward to continuing to cover the White House."

"Monday afternoon's announcement, what the White House called a "final determination," was an abrupt shift from the administration's earlier positions."

Trump backed down again.

The White House letter asserts that reporters may ask "a single question" at a press conference. Follow-ups will only be permitted "at the discretion of the President or other White House officials." And reporters must "physically surrender" the microphone, when directed.

That will never happen. That is Trump's clumsy attempt to bow out gracefully with a tiny bit of dignity.

I think drawing your moral cues from a politician is flawed thinking.

 

So do I, which is why I didn't do that. I described the way all other Presidents have dealt with the press. Presidents do not like being questioned about their policies or statements, but they deal with journalists in a professional manner.

But not Trump.

Acosta questioned Trump over his portrayal of the migrant caravan as an “invasion” heading toward the southern U.S. border, leading to the tense exchange.

“CNN should be ashamed of themselves having you work for them. You are a rude, terrible person,” Trump scolded Acosta. “You should not be working for CNN.”

You know all this, but you still support him. I don't understand that.

 

I've explained why I support President Trump to you directly numerous times.

You simply chose to ignore my reasons for doing so and I suspect the reasons several million Americans continue to do so.

 

That is true. You do support a President who acts like a complete jerk at press conferences. I just wanted to make sure.

 

The letter from Sanders and Shine asserted that reporters may only ask "a single question" at a press conference. Follow-ups will only be permitted "at the discretion of the President or other White House officials." And reporters must "physically surrender" the mic when directed. Violations of "any" of these rules "may result in suspension or revocation." Sounds serious! But is it?

The press corps has not agreed to any new set of "rules." The correspondents' association said it had "no role" in crafting what the White House sent out.

This is a key quote from the association's statement: "For as long as there have been White House press conferences, White House reporters have asked follow-up questions. We fully expect this tradition will continue."

He holds short new conferences like he did today. I watched it. He lied his way through the whole damn thing. Reporters will call on him to account for his lies, and that is what starts the feuding.

With enormous ease Trump lied his way through another news conference today.

TRUMP: “After my heavily negotiated trip to Saudi Arabia last year, the Kingdom agreed to spend and invest $450 billion in the United States. This is a record amount of money. It will create hundreds of thousands of jobs, tremendous economic development, and much additional wealth for the United States.

Actual orders under the arms deal are actually far smaller and neither country has announced or substantiated Trump’s repeated assertion that the Saudis are poised to inject $450 billion overall into the U.S. economy.

Partly negotiated under the Obama administration, it mixes old deals, some new business and prospective purchases that have not been worked out. The Pentagon said last month that Saudi Arabia had signed “letters of offer and acceptance” for only $14.5 billion in military purchases and confirmed Tuesday that nothing further has reached that stage.

Moreover, the State Department estimated last year that if the full $110 billion in prospective business is fulfilled, it could end up “potentially supporting tens of thousands of new jobs in the United States.” That’s a far cry from the 500,000 to 600,000 jobs that Trump has said the arms deal is worth.

The U.S. exported only $16 billion in goods to Saudi Arabia last year, and imported even more. Saudi Arabia’s entire annual economic production is valued at $684 billion. A $450 billion Saudi investment in the U.S. would amount to about 6 percent of its entire economy going to the U.S. if spread, for example, over 10 years.

Trump cited the Kingdom's influence over oil prices and said, "if we abandon Saudi it would be a terrible mistake." Trump also said he was "not going to destroy the economy of our country" over Khashoggi by giving up arms deals to Saudi Arabia.

Destroying our economy over Khashoggi is preposterous, and only his diehard fans could believe that statement. The U.S. economy does not need Saudi oil. The U.S. is a net oil exporter. Apparently, Trump did not know that.

"The CIA looked at it," Trump told journalists at the White House. "They have nothing definitive." "Our intelligence agencies continue to assess all information, but it could very well be that the Crown Prince had knowledge of this tragic event – maybe he did and maybe he didn’t!” Trump said.

The CIA's report is about as definitive as you can get. Based on the clandestinely recorded audio of the Washington Post columnist’s death in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2, the CIA had concluded with "high confidence" that the crown prince directly ordered Khashoggi's killing.

Was there any part of this news conference where Trump actually told the truth. Sure, he began by saying his family would spend Thanksgiving at Mar-a- Lago.

 

Sounds like mere exaggerations to me. Hardly what I would call "lies".

In law this was part of the course. Mistakes are not correct. But do they amount to lies? You read a report done by the WAPO okay? And the reporter tells you that X took place. And so you tell others that X took place. But the paper on page 54 corrects it.

When you reported the original, do you truly want to be called a liar?

 

Actually I do believe that. What makes an "untruth" a "lie" is intent. Deliberate intent to deceive or mislead.

For all I (and you know) President Trump simply exaggerated because he can't remember the truth.

 

When Trump lies like he did in his "Thanksgiving message" to the troops, what are reporters supposed to do. Just take it? Or should they challenge Trump on the authenticity of his statements?

That is what they should do, and Trump will get pissed. Sure enough, like he always does, he will duck the issue and attack the reporter. Then what?

Trump is the cause of the problem at news conferences, not the reporters. Reporters like Acosta are simply asking questions -- that is their job -- and they want truthful answers from the President, not lies.

 

I have a crazy idea:

They are REPORTERS. They should simply REPORT.

It isn't the job of the press to challenge the president or any politician. That is the job of the political opposition.

You need to reassess your position. Lately, you haven't made a bit of sense. But, then, that is true of most Trump fans. Trump is clearly getting worse with his lies, narcissism, and sociopathy, and his fans are becoming more desperate. They never were able to defend him.

With a reply like that, there is little doubt you are a Trump supporter. You want to allow Trump's lies to go unchallenged.

Tell me something. You called Trump an idiot. Why do you support an idiot?

That said, you are far more honest than other Trump supporters. Nearly all of them avoid the issues and try to change the subject or they avoid unpleasant threads altogether. Most choose the latter because than they don't have to deal with it.

They like threads that deal with Hillary, Obama, Democrats, socialism, and leftists. Trump's fans try to avoid discussing Trump.

 

Nah, I think the Secret Service will simply drag the offender from the room, relieve them of their press pass and toss 'em off the property.
