After participating in a thread that discusses a recent Pew research poll that shows how 2/3rds of sub-Saharan Africa’s 1.1 billion people want to move to the US and Europe, I encountered several people making the typical left wing argument about colonialism in Africa. The argument is, essentially, that without Europeans “stealing resources from Africa” the continent could have used those resources and become wealthy themselves. I’ll ignore the history of the continent that shows how those people didn’t even realize they had those resources (or didn’t know what to do with them) and just assume this is true. OK. So why do you, as someone who believes in this idea, support immigration from these areas of highly educated Africans? Because that’s another argument made by the left... that the West should get the best and brightest people around the world to make our countries stronger. Isn’t this also a stealing of their natural resources? Brain drain? Shouldn’t you wish for those people to stay at home making their countries better, so that so many people in those countries can have a better life, and not have to escape to Europe and the US?
