The headline practically says it all. On Wednesday, the United States announced plans to sell $1.7 billion worth of hi-tech weaponry to Taiwan. In response, China fired off an immediate diplomatic protest, and demanded that the U.S. retract the arms sale.

According to official Chinese policy, Taiwan is still part of China proper, and so "China resolutely opposes the sale of weapons to Taiwan by the U.S.," said Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang in a diplomatic meeting. But what is it exactly that China is upset about?

    Taiwan's shopping list
Here's a quick rundown of the weapons systems on Taiwan's shopping list, as notified to Congress in a series of eight announcements by the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the Pentagon arm responsible for coordinating foreign weapons contracts:

•Two decommissioned Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates (FFG-7) will be refurbished and upgraded with new fire control systems, anti-submarine warfare systems, towed-array sonar systems, MK-75 76mm guns, missile launchers, and CIWS weapons systems (see above), prior to commissioning into the Taiwanese Navy. Total value: $190 million.
•And several Taiwan Advanced Tactical Data Link Systems will be installed on six Perry-class frigates (including the two being sold as part of this deal) and four Lafayette-class frigates. These systems, which enable beyond-line-of-sight data links among warships, are valued at $75 million.....snip~

One can see how China would react with giving Taiwan some ships.....and some Manpads, and missiles, huh?

China Raising Threat Level Against Taiwan, but Sparing Drastic Actions
January 16, 2017 — China flexed a military muscle and hit at Taiwan’s foreign relations over the past month as warnings against closer ties with the United States, a long-time protector of self-rule on the island that Beijing considers its own. But so far Beijing is keeping more extreme retaliation measures in reserve.

Contrary to what you believe, China should be happy that the US supplies hi-tech weaponry to Taiwan now, not earlier in the past.

My friend, you should ask this question instead: "How should China react had the US given Taiwan warships, Manpads and missiles from 1949 to 1953?

Now it is too late. China has over 12,000 missiles facing Taiwan. It just presses the buttons to rain the missiles on the island.

However, China has a better way to subdue the island without firing a bullet. It just tightens the screw to restrict Taiwan's global space, cut off Taiwan's remaining diplomatic ties with 21 countries, ban Taiwan's participation in international forums such as the APEC forum, etc.

All the while the US has a complex relationship with Taiwan, displaying a certain degree of mistrust for Chiang Kai-shek and the KMT government. Back in 1949 to 1953, the US could supply arms to Chiang Kai-shek to help him to fight back to the Chinese mainland, but the US refused to do so. This is one of the puzzling relations between the US and Taiwan. Had the US done so, world history would be different.

Another puzzling relation between the US and Taiwan is the lack of support by the US for the KMT government's claim over the South China Sea when it first published a map on 1 December 1947 showing a U-shaped eleven-dash line. World history would be different had the US supplied warships to help Taiwan control the South China Sea before China built up its naval capability to enter the fray for the control of the Spratly Islands.

Maybe in the end the US would have to tell the Taiwanese leader to behave like North Korea 's Kim and start developing nuclear bombs.

China to Trump: You can say what you like. I just take it as the crowing of a rooster every morning in the year of the rooster. :knifefork:

According to Sun Zi, "The greatest victory is that which requires no battle."

China can tighten its screw on Taiwan by restricting the island's global space, getting the remaining 21 countries to sever their diplomatic ties with the island, forbidding it from participating in all international forums such as the APEC forum, and further reducing the tourist flow to the island.
