Not when everything, including the rights of the people, are subject to the whim of whatever group can summon up a 50.1% majority at any given time. Again, there is a reason why the Founders did not believe in democracy... nor did they structure us as one.

Winston Churchill was not American, and he was not one of our Founders. Democracy appears nowhere in our founding documents, because we are NOT a democracy. We care about protecting the rights of the minority... even the smallest minority there is: the individual citizen.

 

A Democracy is mob rule, gin up a large group of useless idiots and a despot can get what ever he wants, constitutional or not.

Like the right not to get shot in math class

 

There is no such thing as a right to not be murdered. Rights only exist with relation to actions of the government. For a "right to not get shot in math class" to apply the killings would have to be carried out by government agents rather than private citizens.

Deputies are spread very thin,
Most people are expected to provide somewhat for their own defense.

At one point walking on a rural county road, I encountered a rabid dog, it was obviously rabid and lurched in my direction, I drew my sidearm and put the dog out of it's misery.

If I had not been Armed, this dog may have bitten me or a child or some unaware or unarmed person.

And waiting for a Sheriffs deputy to respond might have resulted in people getting bitten and infected with rabies.
