A question to Republican forum residents. Are you prepared for not receiving your SS check next month? Because that could be the consequence if the government is forced into default.

    https://www.nbcnews.com/business/ec...ayments-what-happens-if-us-defaults-rcna83836

"Dan Adcock, director of government relations and policy for the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, said there is a "good chance" that in the event of a default, millions of Americans' benefits would be disrupted.

"Seniors should be prepared if they're financially able," Adcock said, adding they should consider putting off discretionary purchases "so they have enough to tide them over."
    "

My guess: McCarthy knows that seniors on SS and Medicare are the base of the GOP, therefore, he won't let this happen. That's why they want to cut spending for the "others", such as the unemployed, poor people, etc, i.e. the ones on the GOP undesirables list. However, the spending for the big three, SS, Medicare and defense cannot be touched, because their constituents benefit from them.

Now the next question is: How do you balance the budget without cuts to those big three? Go ahead Republican forum members, knock yourself out with doing the math. And, no, cutting financial aid to Ukraine won't do the trick.

I am financially okay, but a lot of other seniors aren’t. Instead using scare tactics, perhaps the Democrats and the Republicans could give fiscal responsibility a try.

If the Republicans ever regain control of the government, which is becoming more doubtful, the time will have come for the grass roots conservatives to demand a 1% cut in spending (the penny proposal), or at a minimum, a spending freeze. The situation has reached that point.

By spending freeze, I mean just that. In government jargon, a “cut” now means reducing next year’s planed spending increase. In other words, if the Washington spendthrifts planned on increasing the budget by 4%, but increased it by 3% instead, that’s a “cut.” Obviously it isn’t.

A stall in social security payouts won't happen this time. Not until every last cent can be dragged out of The People's wallets. Then the whole program crashes and people who were depending on it can depend on starving.

It should stop though. Stop the bread line for just one week and wake The People up to the fact that Social security is like three card Monty. The suckers get sucked in and the house takes it all in the end.

Politicians, both D and R, know better than to disrupt social security payments. Period. Relax seniors. Today's date is May 20, 2023, and I'll repost this statement in a couple of weeks after a budget deal is reached.

I hope that you are right, but too many people on both sides want the default to happen. Odds of a resolution remain low

That is true, it's the "starve the beast" mentality, if you want to reduce the size of government (code words for tearing it down), you have to deprive it of revenue. That's been the driver behind GOP tax cuts all the way back to Reagan.

That's not true. I haven't seen ANYONE on the left wanting the default to happen. People on the right, on the other hand, seem to be itching for it, because they somehow were made believe that a default will force spending cuts. Of course, they also believe that their own government cheese, i.e. SS checks, will still keep flowing. That's why I created this thread.

Cutting spending on welfare and unemployment is directed generally at the young and able bodied who've built no equity in the matter from which to rightfully draw. It is charity. Keeping them on the dole is an unnecessary burden on taxpayers, and encourages sloth and dependency in the recipients. Social Security is not only a different fund, but is reserved for those who've spent a lifetime working and building up equity in the fund. To protect it isn't to protect your own party, but is simply the right thing to do. Does serving God cheat the devil? Republicans don't serve Republicans. They serve America.

That said, failing to reach an agreement would hurt everyone suddenly, especially the retired and dependent. And more succinctly the retired, as their options are severely restricted by age and health.

The left didn't want to negotiate; doesn't want to curb spending, put together a ridiculous (meaningless) budget and if they had had their way would have already added trillions more to the debt requiring quicker and larger debt ceiling increases

Anyone with a brain knew when the GOP won the house this was going to be an issue. So, unless the left suddenly is agreeable to significant spending cuts they are just as complicit.

They wanted this game of chicken as they think it will give them more power in 24 and when the default happens it will all be about the political blame game

Republicans have done their job and passed a bill to raise debt limit and cut spending... This is now in the hands of the Democrats and Biden... not Republicans.
As usual our liberal friends accuse the Republicans for the Democrat garbage.

Raising the debt limit with no change to spending is the same as enabling a crack addict buying him crack enabling the addiction so they don't rob people.

I'm not sure I understand the premise. Even if there is a "default" why would that effect Social Security payments? Social Security is self financing and isn't really part of the budget. I would think the only reason Social Security would stop payments would be if the government made the decision to shut down the program to hijack SS funds for some other needs.

Fake News. There is zero chance that SS checks won't go out in 11 days, and you know it. And you wonder why the nation is fed up with the divisive fear mongering of too many Dems?
    • If Illegitimate Joe directs Secty Yellen to NOT send out SS checks, she will refuse and resign.
    • If she obeys Rigged Bribed Joe's order from the depths of hell, she needs to be promptly impeached.
YES: Climate Change Weekly #471: Special Edition: The Republican Debt Ceiling Bill Deserves the People’s Support.

Contrary to the shrill claims made in the' lying fake news 'media, the United States will not necessarily miss debt payments, much less default on its debt, if the debt ceiling is not raised by June 1. There are a lot of discretionary programs and spending that can be cut. Domestic bill payments can be delayed, and agencies or departments can be closed while negotiations continue and the debt is serviced.' And SS payments will be made.

The House’s sensible 'line on spending comes at a time when, according to a recent poll by Pew Research, nearly 60 percent of Americans list reducing the budget deficit as a top priority.'

'The LSGA would require reducing discretionary spending at various departments and agencies to their fiscal 2022 levels.'

Perfectly reasonable. In 2022 these various agencies and departments spent one HELL of a lot of money.

What a load of male bovine excrement. You totally mischaracterized the situation. Speaker of the House McCarthy is not pushing for a balance budget. The Limit, Save, Grow Act raises the debt ceiling and cuts spending. They are not attacking Medicare or Social Security in the Bill. They are only cutting back spending that Biden has put in place. Much of it illegally enacted by EO. Things like the Student Loan Forgiveness. It also rolls back Green Energy Tax Credits, and restrictions of Energy production. Only a complete idiot would try to transfer our fossil fuel energy consumption to our power grid, then limit the power grid can produce energy. There may be a time when green energy can support all our transportation needs (for example), but it is not now. Batteries for electric vehicles do not last long enough to be feasible. (I spoke to several people that own electric vehicles and they told me that they could only get about 250 miles per charge, and it cost them more the $85.00 and four hours to charge their vehicle. The average MPG for a new vehicle is just over 25 miles per gallon. In a 20 gallon tank, and at $3.54 (current national average) per gallon, it costs $70.80 to fill a gas powered car. Based on the fuel milage of new vehicles, you can travel 500 miles on a 20 gallon tank of fuel. A new EV costs you an average of $10,000 more and another $1,500 to $4,000 to upgrade your house. That is not feasible for most families.)

The only item in the Limit, Save, Grow Act that affects a family is the increase of the SNAP work requirements from age 50 to 56, but there is also an advantage. Right now, the law allows states to keep the saving that are gained by the work requirements. This act will require states to pay that money back to SNAP recipients. Further, keeping workers in the workforce for sex years longer will add funds to Social Security. Which by the way is not even mentioned in the GOP act.

The Act raise the Debt Ceiling by $1.5 Trillion, take actions to ensure that help ensure maximum time before it has to be raised again. Maybe by then we will have a fiscal conservative President that will reduce wasteful government spending.

Democrats want to raise the by $2.5 Trillion through next year. Then during the election year, revisit the question yet again. With no spending cuts, that is totally irresponsible. The GOP has offered a way out, but the DNC is refusing to budge. If we default, it is totally on the DNC's shoulders. But I do not think the DNC will take it to the point of defaulting. Not with an election year so close. There will be a compromise approved at the last minute. Otherwise, you can guarantee a GOP led Congress, Senate and President in 2025!

Spending cut on WHAT? There is no way to seriously consider any proposal that just says "cut spending". It's demagoguery. If you cut spending in roads and bridges, the whole economy suffers. If you cut spending in law enforcement, crime increases, and then the government will HAVE to spend more in prisons and the judicial system.

So you have to say WHAT you want to cut, why you want to cut it, and how the cuts you propose decrease the deficit without hurting businesses.

It likely takes a small cut in almost everthing rather than large cuts in specific areas. As such, it is not possible to put it in a bill. We faced this in the military just about all the time. They would tell us to cut our spending by some specific amount and then we would do it.

Nobody in the federal government can "cut spending". The best they can do is stop legislative mandatory increases in spending. It's really not the same thing.

    Thanks Woodrow Wilson(D) !

Yep, government spending needs to go higher and higher with no end in sight. I know that doing audits and making sure that money gets where it was intended is not politically sexy, but if you are going to try to fix the problem, it's necessary. We also need to find ways to slow this spending down, or it's going to destroy the economy.

The spending increases are now out of control. The days are gone when in 1970, my Keynesian economics professor could gave reasonable lecture about the nature and size of the national debt.

Here's a stat for you. In 2022, the government spent $1.3 billion dollars a day just to pay the interest on the national debt. That is almost $475 billion a year. If the current treads continue, the number will be $3.9 billion a day. That comes out to $1.4 trillion a year.

    https://www.pgpf.org/blog/2023/02/i...lize that rapid growth,to 3.6 percent in 2033.
