Of course these videos are in bad taste, but are they to the level that a 17yr old teen should be charged with a crime.

This case reminds me a lot of the Genarlow Wilson case in Douglasville, GA a few years back.

As a parent I would definitely be upset, but I would have to deal with my kid since this wasn't a case where she/he was forced to do anything they didn't want to do.

When I was in the military Bossier City was off limit to soldiers because of a lot of racist establishments there.

I lived in Shreveport at one time also and was a little leery of Bossier City.

 

Okay, they just pointed out in the article that this legally constitutes child pornography in Louisiana. I agree that it's not a well-crafted law, but immediately assigning racist motives to the people involved is dangerous and disingenuous.

I don't doubt that racism is still a problem in the South, but you can't given any particular case use that general fact to imply racism when there are other perfectly legitimate reasons for what occurred. For example, hysterical parents and a poorly written law.

When I was in school we were all warned about this very thing in class and I can recall specifically telling girls to NOT send me anything illegal beforehand when talking to them..

I'm going to ignore the race angle because the story seems to have been written specifically to stir up racial agitation.

But I disagree that any crime was committed. Some states, if not all of them, allow for a degree of separation of ages to exist because in reality 18 year olds date 16 year olds, I did. But being that this kid was 17 it's quite possible to believe that at one time both he AND the girl were 16 which would have made everything bizarrely legal. Let the kid go and tell the girl to stop acting like a slut.

 

I agree, partially. But the human brain isn't fully developed until 25. At 16, it's essentially mush ... especially when it comes to sex.

Its more than that, there have been portable cameras, Polaroids, and such for decades. While cell phone tech has increased recently, it is not a viable excuse for all the rest, there is a distinct break down of social norms, and sadly those break downs can haunt people for years to come...

 

It's a stupid law. It's stupid to always jump to the conclusion that racism is the motivation for every ill, or act of stupidity in the world.

 

Here in Vermont we have a couple of cases just like this working through the system. I'm thinking the young man has some other past charges. He's a juvenile so we don't know.
