I thought republicans were the party that was “pro-life”?

    https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2022/05/republicans-formula-bills-note-votes

But the rot goes quite a bit deeper than the hypocrisy of “caring” for a clump of cells but ignoring the plight of a born baby. This is a “Owning the libs”. See they cannot vote for a bill that would make democrats look in any way better than them - even if that bill is to address a real and urgent issue

This sort of behaviour should affront all members of the political spectrum - congress critters, parliamentarians, senators - it does not matter what you call them, if they are voted into office then they have an obligation TO THEIR CONSTITUENTS!

So what other sorts of pet project pork was attached to the bill?

Democrats wanted American babies to starved by sending all the formula to the borders....

See? I can engage in silly hyperbole too!

It's not surprising, because the only interest they have in babies not starving is that they can use this crisis to attack Biden. Thus, they BENEFIT if the crisis lasts as long as possible.

It is like the vaccines all over again - don’t encourage voters to get vaccinated because that will make Biden look good. Who cares is they die - Biden will look bad!

What happened to “Put party aside and just get the freaking job done! “. Honest.y we used to pick our representatives based on “what will you do for your district” not how far up someone else’s backside they are.

Except it turns out that was powdered milk not baby formula

Now what part of my post was exaggeration? Near as I can tell there was no “pork” except some funding for increased FDA officials required to ensure the formula being imported is of the neccessary standard

Something tells me this is misleading and dishonest.

I really wonder. Are parents so stupid and helpless that they can't figure out how to make their own baby formula? (Sadly, the answer seems to obviously be yes)

If there is a shortage, how would spending more money on it help?

It sounds like it could have just been a feel-good bill that would have spent a lot of money and not spent that money very cost effectively.

It seems the real issue is legal and regulatory barriers that prevent consumers from being able to buy formula made in other countries. These barriers are of course understandable, but should be lifted (or relaxed) temporarily in this situation.

I believe Canada could ease the shortage. A simple policy change could ease the issue.

For repubs, owning the libs is their whole agenda, no matter who they hurt.

Show us what the money in this bill would have actually been spent on. Specifically.

Otherwise there is very good reason to assume it is dishonest and misleading.

If the problem that exists is not enough formula on store shelves, then "buying" more of it is definitely not going to help.

How stupid would you have to be to think that?

My point was, if any women are having trouble, it's not a difficult matter for the hospital to make the woman pump out milk.

    Totally.
This seems like someone is throwing babies on the political alter if you ask me. Can’t you get boob pumps at Walmart if you really need one?

I took a look at the bill. I can see why so many Republicans voted against it.

It doesn't really give money directly to women, it just gives 28 million in extra funding to two agencies, and one of those is for the FDA to hire more government workers (allegedly according to this bill that would somehow help them solve this crisis).

It sounds mostly like a just a "feel good" bill that isn't really needed.

I would probably have voted against this bill too.

From what I'm reading, it sounds like the baby formula industry is bogged down in regulations and government red tape. It's not so easy to just get a new factory started, without approval from government agencies and permits.

Meanwhile, the Biden Administration is using military planes to fly baby formula in from overseas, which is mostly just political grandstanding, since actually physically being able to transport the baby formula is not the issue. The issue is legal and regulatory barriers standing in the way.

You can tell it is election time. This is just another "Republicans want to push granny off a cliff" story meant to try and gain Democrat votes. Democrats target minority and women voters.

    So predictable.

Why not run on the great job dems have been doing?
Answer: Because they have been doing a lousy job.

Trumpers are too funny. They beat Biden over the head with this crisis for weeks, claiming that he doesn't care if babies get fed or even die. Then, the Dem House votes on a bill to address the issue, GOP House members vote against it, for obvious reasons. The Trumper response: Why can't women just breast feed. You can't make this stuff up.....

For dems it is about targeting women and minorities no matter how many lies they have to tell.

Beggers can't be choosers, I suppose.

Maybe they should divert that milk off to the facilities at the border, and make sure they tell the parents where that milk came from!

Trump made it harder to import baby formula from Canada, should we reverse that?

    https://www.newsweek.com/baby-formula-shortage-trump-cananda-usmca-1708188

"Trump bears much of the blame for the current shortage of baby formula in the U.S, since his Administration's USMCA free trade agreement has made it virtually IMPOSSIBLE for our country to import infant formula from Canada"

That's disappointing. Luckily it passed still.
