I don't see a thread specifically dedicated to this, and since it's a really big event happening right now, here it is now. The opening ceremony is still going on right now and it's the world showcase to be exact.

Mods, feel free to move this if it's not in the right spot.

Did the U.S. flag bearer dip the flag in front of the Queen? I heard it was a bit of a controversy going in, but they didn't mention it or show it during the opening ceremonies from what I saw.

Quite rightly so! Long live the Queen! :)

Now lets get on with this 250km road race and get The Cav's train rolling! I'm really looking forward to watching Team GB of both road and velodrome!

I will sticky this thread because the Olympics is one of the biggest sporting events.

I watched part of the Opening Ceremony. It was okay, I liked the torch - I still think Sydney was better! The games start later tonight and I hope we get to see some swimming.

Russia's 23rd ranked Beach Volleyball team, VASINA & VOZAKOVA upset China's 2nd ranked team ZHANG X & XUE in pool play! (on a side note, that Russian girl, Anna Vasina, is a cutie - just sayin')

I enjoyed the opening ceremony - very different! I'm not sure how much some of the eccentricity and humour was appreciated by the rest of the world, though!

I missed the opening. Just as well (for me personally), I'm not really into the pageantry that typically precedes these events.

I will hopefully, have an opportunity to view some of the competition.

My congratulations to all the athletes that dedicated so much of their life, energy and effort, to making it.

Ha! The U.S. flag bearer did NOT dip the flag in front of the Queen. I believe we were the only country not to. Considering the beatdowns we handed the Brits in the past, and considering the times we saved their asses in wars, there is no reason we should dip our flag in front of that old bat. If anything, she should bow when our flag passes.

Phelps barely qualifies in first event.

Phelps needs to lay off the weed.

You know, perhaps now isn't the best time to say this... but I just don't care for this guy. I mean, yea *waves flag and all*, but Phelps is a tool, and not a very sharp one (IMO).

He should give thanks daily that he was born to swim like a fish, otherwise he would be SOL.

Spot on. A nice little curtsey from that old cadaver was in order. Well, I guess we'll have to settle with the US kicking their ass again.

The U.S. Women's basketball team only leading by 6 at the end of the 3rd quarter against Croatia! This is a team the U.S. beat by 50+ a couple of weeks ago. If somehow Croatia pulls it out, it will probably be considered the biggest upset in women's bb history.

Meh, you're jumping the gun, they're playing their entire squad and giving everyone minutes...and of course when the US wanted to turn up the heat, the USA blew them away by 25.

Yea, it took to the 4th quarter. The offense looked ragged though. I'm sure as they progress, they will play better. Hope so at least.

Couldn't resist, could you. But since the end of WWII, all you have done is stick it up your own arses.

It's your President who does the bowing. He knows his place.

    Now, back to the Olympics.

If he knew his place, he'd still be a "community organizer" in Chicago.

    How is Phelps going?

Oh! He isn't. First Gold dropped.

    Ah! Diddums!

Highly doubtful. Even 3rd world starving nations like Ethiopia out performed Canada in 2008. Maybe one day igloo building or maple syruping will become Olympic events, but until then...

Who cares about one individual? An American named Ryan Lochte won the gold in the event.

We know our place. If only Americans knew theirs, instead of boasting and underachieving.
