This young man was told he need a circumcision to treat his overly tight foreskin. He had the procedure done, but then was very unhappy and regretted it.
He committed suicide 2 years after the surgery, leaving a note explaining why.

What this does demonstrate is not every person who has a circumcision later in life is happy with the results.

which means all those babies were denied the choice

    from the article

"This is commonly known as circumcision, but Alex had come to believe it should be regarded as "male genital mutilation"

I say leave little children privates alone (male or female) ... just my two cents

Just like thousands if not millions of other people who have elective surgery as adults and are then unhappy/dissatisfied with the results. The vast majority however do not commit suicide as a result - which indicates there were other deep seated psychological issues at play in this persons life prior to the surgery taking place.

Would you say the same thing about a 23-year-old girl who was forced to undergo circumcision against her will and then committed suicide?
    - it's only a tiny piece of flesh.

(Yes, my example here is more extreme than the case in the opening post, but my point is, the fact that the vast majority do not commit suicide does not in any way mean that the suicide of a very small minority is not indicative of something horrendous having taken place. I'm simply making this analogy to demonstrate that the point you made is not actually logical)

Errrr... I think the use of the word 'forced' in your question tends to make the answer somewhat obvious.

For the rest? Where in my post did I suggest the suicide in question was not a tragedy?

My point was that the vast majority not committing suicide does not mean that one rare suicide is not indicative of how bad something was.

How about a woman kills herself because of a rape. Are you really going to say that doesn't show how bad the experience was, even though a hundred other women who went through the exact same situation didn't kill themselves?

Which makes the reaction in both cases subjective. However in neither case can suicide objectively be regarded as a justifiable or proportionate outcome.

    What a tragic story. :(

I wish it wasn't performed in the majority of males.

Well, it just goes to show that circumcision shouldn't take place later in life.

The article suggests that the surgeon who performed the procedure may have botched it.

In some cultures it's still regarded as a right of passage to adulthood or similar for young adult males to be circumcised. There are also reported to be some and I stress only some health advantages. The biggest one I recall is it reduced the chances (to a degree of contracting AIDS) although the research that found this to be the case is old and may have changed. I havnt checked in years.

Now that you mention it that seems far more likely to be the cause of the unfortunate man's suicide than mere dissatisfaction with simple cosmetic appearance post surgury.

Well, this is only my opinion, but I assume that sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are just more apparent when the foreskin is attached. My thoughts are that taking off the foreskin merely masks these STDs. In the ancient times, when men were serving in the military and went off to fight a war with the people over the next hill, they slept/raped the enemy's women and didn't want to let their wives from knowing the difference.

Oh, and it seems that 75% of men in the USA have gotten circumcision. I used to think it was just a religious thing, but 75%? That's a tradition not a religion.
