Ok folks, we can all read between the lines here. 3 dozen democrats have come to the realization that a senile man with dementia who has the absolute authority to launch nukes is just maybe not a comforting thought.

That democrats are doing this now is a clear sign they're concerned with Biden's mental processes.

I don't think we have to worry about Biden launching nukes. We have to worry about him giving them to his buddies in Iran and China. 2 countries he puts before America

I've always wondered in the absence of a credible, immediate nuclear threat against the US would such an order be obeyed. Speaking for myself the thought of ANY one man having the power to literally start the destruction of civilization is anything but comforting.

It's more than that, though that is certainly part of it. Doubts about Biden’s mental acuity aren’t only reason to limit prez’s nuke power.

Congress needs put this into legislative form and pass it.

Yeah sure...let's limit our Comander in Chiefs ability to retaliate against another country that has launched nuclear weapons at us. I'm sure that Congress can debate within the time frame between first learning of the enemies launch and the moment DC is hit....

Maybe those 3 dozen dems aren't so dumb after all. Now I want the MSM to ask the 3 dozen why and also ask Biden his opinion of their move. I won't hold my breath.

I agree that the incredible power of starting a nuclear world war should not rest in the hands of one single person. We've seen after the last election how much havoc one determined person can wreak, who wants to stay in power using almost any means. If the next guy is even more unhinged than Trump, what would prevent them from starting a nuclear war when they are voted out, so they can use emergency powers for a power grab?

It used to be that people trusted that the lawfully elected president of the US would do the right things -- for the US AND the world. After Trump, I am not sure anyone trusts anymore.

And yet, it's under Biden where Congress is finally stripping unaccountable emergency powers:

Rand Paul, Ron Wyden Want To End Endless National Emergencies.

“Under a bill the two senators reintroduced on Friday, all presidential emergency declarations would expire after 72 hours unless Congress votes to allow them to continue.”

no one is worried about biden launching a first strike.

many people are saying that trump will be elected in 2024. he must not have this power. i think we were protected only by the restraint of what you might call the deep state. trump might have his own cultists in those positions next time.

besides, as an "originalist, shouldn't congress be declaring war before any president decides to destroy the earth?

It doesn't. The scary part is the President must memorize which code is the real one. Biden can't memorize squat. For good or bad, the Vice President has the codes too, in case the President is incapacitated. Well, maybe he is already. Secretary of Defense must agree with the President's to launch, or bomb, with nukes, and then it goes through the rest of the military.

Yes, the military and Secretary of Defense must obey the President's order, but the order must also be lawful or they wont do it.
    For example:
#1) The Space Force detects a nuclear weapons launch, they know its headed to New York City. The President is informed that a ICBM is on the way, the nuclear "football" is opened up, and the President must decide what to do. Ok, its a first strike, launch all weapons. The President must read his code. The SecDef concurs and the birds are launched.
#2) The President decides to attack China. A military aide, who carries the football, can ask "WTF" and not obey and not open the football, but a court martial will happen. No birds are launched.
#3] The President decides to attack China. A military aide, who carries the football, opens the football. The President uses the code to attack China. The Secretary of Defense says "WTF" and not obey. No birds are launched.

The President can only authorize that nuclear weapons to be used. There's no big red button he can push. The Secretary of Defense can't read the code, they can only come from the President. The launch code must match what the President read (input really) and Secretary of Defense must concur (input his code), all the way to the missile or bomb hardware. The Secretary of Defense could refuse, and so could anyone down the line (like a sub commander, won't get into the ramifications), but the order to "fire" must come the President.

forget option #1. we are not talking MAD triggered by an enemy first strike.

option #2 is problematic. young lieutenants are not likely to question this order.

we are talking about the lame duck president making last minute changes to have his cult members at the pentagon to make the decisions in option #3.

It's a hard one. My opinion: leave things as they are. The system seems to have worked so far.

I'm guessing the public doesn't really know what the system is, exactly, either.

Because it was always believed that a U.S. president would only launch nuclear weapons IN RESPONSE to a nuclear attack on the U.S.

Thus launch nuclear weapons would be considered "defense of the country" and NOT waging a war. A president has always had and always will have the right to use American military forces defensively without Congressional approval.

The code had to be changed after Trump posted the code on Twitter instead of him posting the mnemonic onto his personal diary as a reminder - COVFEFE = 031522050605. After all, he directly disclosed nuclear secrets to Russian embassadors in a meeting in the white House just to show off. Yet you think that Biden's memory is worse than Trump's

This is a very wise idea, and I applaud the Democrats for acknowledging the President's obvious mental deficiencies, and taking steps to mitigate the damage his dementia may cause.

Not nearly as scary as having someone else have that power. At least Biden is elected, vetted and the actual commander in chief. imagine if they made it a committee decision. or let the congress debate it for a few weeks in order to come to a vote. Those democrats are wrong in this case, as they are in most cases.

Interesting -- let me see, all presidents, young and old, dem or repub, had the nuclear codes but 3 dozen dems say Biden shouldn't have the codes. Maybe they should just come out and say he shouldn't be president, or maybe they just did.

The protocol for the president unilaterally launching nuclear weapons is highly classified and I have no knowledge of such procedures. But it is my understanding that it takes several levels of command to make it happen.

The prospect of swift retaliation is the deterrent, the only value of nuclear codes in the hands of the CIC. Take away the deterrent by inserting a debate by Democrats between an attack and retaliation, and the value of the means to retaliate is zilch.

    Technically it does.

    Technically.

But during a major crisis the orders to launch nuclear weapons could be executed with breathtaking speed.

Of course in a major crisis, chances are no one is going to be questioning launch orders anyway.
