' The 458th Transportation Company (Light Amphibian) arrived at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, on 13 October 1966. Cam Rahn Bay had been built up by the Army to relieve the deep water ports at Da Nang and Saigon.' ' While under the command of 1LT Pete Sellers, the 458th received six Boston Whalers to conduct harbor patrols in August 1967. The Boston Whalers were 12-foot, flat-bottom, fiberglass skiffs. Because of its small size it could search locations that larger boats could not reach, like under piers or in extremely shallow waterways. The Boston Whalers were used by the unit until they received the Patrol Boat, River (PBR) MK II in early 1968'' The mission of the 458th transitioned to inland-water security and port security, duties previously performed by the US Navy and Coast Guard.'
Found this by accident.I knew about the Navy's riverine forces, Swift boats and PBRs...but not this.
