    Cops are no more immune to the virus than the rest of us. But their role in our public safety is paramount, especially in times of crisis. I really hope that we don't see looting and violence as a result of them being out sick;

"The number of New York City police officers calling out sick continues to climb, with about 6,100 of them, or about 17 percent of the entire department, staying home on Wednesday, officials said.

The NYPD has been hampered by the coronavirus, and Chief of the Department Terrance Monahan said more than 1,400 of its members, mostly uniformed and some civilian, have tested positive for COVID-19. Four civilian employees and one detective have died after contracting the virus so far.

The nation's largest police force is now implementing their plan to have administrative and narcotics officers out in patrol cars to fill the void.

    wow, those are big #s!.

I'm wondering how many decided its safer at home. lots of spouses have strong opinions on the subject as things go south.

I know my wife has about 20 weeks of sick time piled up, so it's been a discussion we've had.

This is happening in many large cities.

They also let many prison inmates out of jail to "avoid" the Chi-vi.

amen to that. Even more than usual I appreciate having some open spaces, limited traffic, room to spread out.

I like hearing crickets at night in the back yard.

They could also call out the auxiliary police as well to beef up their ranks. In NYC the Auxiliary police number just under 5,000.

These folks are on duty continuing to serve their communities. It looks to me, from photos that I've seen as that they could do a better job on social distancing, though handling others is part of the job, but still, it's wise to minimize what you cannot eliminate.

THE THIN BLUE CHECKOUT LINE. Kindness during coronavirus: Boston police officer buys groceries for single mom in need.

    Not all heroes wear capes:

Three kids and their mom won’t have to have empty cupboards during the coronavirus crisis after a new Boston police officer picked up their bill at the grocery store.

The woman, who identified herself as Jenn, told Boston’s Country 102.5 that on Tuesday she’d filled her cart with food at the Star Market in the Prudential Center and had gone to check out when she realized she didn’t have her EBT card.

“All I could do is go outside and cry,” she told the radio station Wednesday morning.

Luckily, that’s when Boston Police Officer Ben Peguero was passing by, heading into the store.

“I hear a woman sitting by the curbside crying, and I was just worried,” Peguero, who’s been on the force for less than a year, told reporters on Wednesday.

So the cop went up to her and asked her what was the matter.

“I thought I was in trouble and needed to leave,” the single mother told the station — but the officer was just checking on her.

Peguero said he offered to buy her a few things, and she initially resisted, telling him he didn’t. need to worry. But he insisted, and she relented. She said she went inside and looked to just grab a few items to hold them over, but Peguero noticed that her cart, which remained full of the groceries she’d originally picked out, looked like she was shopping for kids. He asked her if that was the case, and she said yes, she has three young daughters.

So Peguero told the cashiers to ring up everything in the cart — and he’d pay for it.

It's reasonable to assume there is some illness among their ranks, however it's also safe to assume not all of then are ill and can render service.

The rank and file officers are furious with the Mayor going back to before the corona virus. This may be them trying to send a message.
