It would be a good idea to have 2 bug out packs in case you can't retrieve one or another. It's time for me to rebuild mine.

That's in the southern most areas of Irvine,
    Irvine spectrum.
Horrible place. Geographical low point with the worst local air quality as the
county vents out to the south. Same for "The Great Park".
I believe the businesses there never lived up to expectations.
Example of "over development". And a development nobody needs.
I wonder how that Hilton is doing?

I was there on a weekend, seemed to be buzzing.

    Both event rooms were occupied.

Took the scenic route home and passed UC Irvine, which I hadn't been to since school.

Lots of overcrowded overpriced tract homes, median home prices are 1 million.

I could purchase a home now but why?

    Meh is my only thought.

    Yes, buzzing but how profitable?
Stores with "window shoppers" of people just walking of waiting for the movie to start.
Sure Hilton event rooms are filled for either low price or
the company scheduler doesn't know the territory.
Spectrum / Double Tree is the anus of Irvine.

The trick to this area is live on the ocean facing slopes.
My family moved here in Eastbluff when it was the outback.
Jamboree was a small, 2 lane road with dirt on each side.
I have a good pension I could take anywhere and probably live better,
short of Beverly Hills or equally priced area but, I Like Eastbluff. Newport Beach.

Not to be confused with The Bluffs.
And I do not believe Republicans in Orange County
lost so completely in a "fair" election.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh and not to stray too far off topic
I only felt the 7.1 earthquake.
A lamp rattled and I went outside.
Saw my neighbor's pool slosh but stay contained.
    etc. etc.

    That 7.1 was wild.

If you are one of those shining houses on a hill, hope you have all emergency preps planned.

    No excuse not to.

Riiiiiiiiight. And what happens if you get caught with a joint in Arkansas?

What happens if you are suffering horribly with no hope of living - only suffer horribly until you die - in a red state? You are forced to suffer by bible thumpers, no matter how horrible the agony. You have some really good folks there...

The right of choice for women, being left to live in peace if you're gay, or even if you want booze, in some counties, all a problem in red states.

Red States tend to be ass backwards and a century behind the times. As the one sign says when you hit the border:
Welcome to Indiana! Please set your clocks back 200 years.

Boeing relocated 787 production to a red state. Suddenly they have all sorts of problems with the workers being unwilling or incapable of following procedures. Isn't that interesting! Metal shavings in wiring ducts, and oily rags left in engines, are a couple of examples of the quality of workmanship they are getting.

Over the years, I've written a number of posts about earthquakes and the earthquake faults of California. All I'll say now is that this pair of quakes were quite shallow, and that the only really remarkable thing about the "Ridgecreat Fault" is its close proximity to the Garlock Fault, which is unusual in that it runs from a junction with the San Andreas Fault in the southwest to very near the Ridgecrest area.

If the Garlock Fault ruptures, it could cause a reaction in the San Andreas not seen since the Tejon Earthquake of 1857, which was the largest historic earthquake that California has witnessed. Link: http://www.sjvgeology.org/geology/tejon_earthquake.html

If the San Andreas reacts as it could, it very well might set off a reaction far to the north with the Hayward Fault -- and that's the one everybody had better be concerned with, because it runs directly under the heart of Oakland. The Hayward came under enormous additional strain after the San Andreas broke near San Francisco in 1906, and that strain has only built more ever since. A joint Hayward-San Andreas rupture could put half of San Francisco under water, and obliterate Oakland.

BTW, the next time you hear news media 'experts' say that an earthquake occurred at any magnitude greater than 6.0 on THE RICHTER SCALE, you know you're listening to someone who has no real knowledge of earthquake measurement. The old Richter Scale was based entirely on readings taken from the Wood-Anderson torsion seismograph. Real seismologists don't use "Richter" anymore except to put events in terms that most of the public probably relate to. The Richter scale does not reliably measure earthquakes greater than somewhere between 6.0 - 6.5 (at the very most). Real seismologists use the 'magnitude scale' instead....

Anyway, for now, keep your eye on the Garlock Fault, and, with appropriate dread, on the Hayward Fault.... If an earthquake of the kind I described above occurred in the Bay Area, it could possibly bankrupt the United States.... If Californians want to secede, right NOW would be a great time to encourage them to go ahead and form their own independent country, in charge of paying their own bills....

    God is not politically correct.

If he was, you would have been hit with lightening.

The pointing of fingers has begun.

Some are saying it was an act of God.

Others are saying it was the Devil.

The loony left are blaming climate change.

Then there's those with TDS who are pointing fingers at Russia Russia Russia.

    Russia Russia Russia ???
What's not being reported is that most of the damage from the 7.1 was at the China Lake NWAS.

    But lets digress.
    Republicans...
By Monday (yesterday) Ridgecrest was up and running.
SCE has the electrical grid up and everyone has power.
All broken gas lines have been repaired.
Water lines have been repaired and there's water again.
The sewage treatment plant is up and running.
    Home Depot is open.
McDonalds, Del Taco, Burger King and Starbucks are open and secretly providing plastic straws.
Local government (city hall) are back in business.
Police and Kern County Sheriff deputies can't find any looters.
The federal government (Post Office) is open and the mail is being delivered.
The state government (The Totalitarian State of California) as usual is still dysfunctional.
The DMV office is the only thing not open for business in Ridgecrest.
    Anyone surprised ?

I smell the corpse of Saul Alinsky and union organizers.

The same thing happened with Harley Davidson when AMF owned HD.

    China Lake NAWS

Following last week’s earthquakes up to 7.1 magnitude in the Ridgecrest area, Rear Admiral Bette Bolivar, Commander Navy Region Southwest, has issued an evacuation order for Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake on July 6, 2019. The facility has been declared not mission capable until further notice and is open only for mission essential personnel, while damage to the infrastructures is being assessed.

At this time there aren’t more details about the amount of damage occurred to China Lake. According to the Washington Post, “the earthquake caused multiple structure fires, thousands of power outages, road ruptures and water and gas leaks” but luckily no casualties have been reported. California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency due to “widespread and significant damage”.

As stated in a Facebook post in the official NAWS China Lake page, “NAWS China Lake is not mission capable until further notice; however, security protocols remain in effect. Safety of personnel is currently the highest priority. NON ESSENTIAL active duty, drilling reservists, civilian employees, and dependents are authorized to evacuate to a radius of 100 miles from safe haven Naval Base Ventura County (NVBC).”

Excellent views of the fault rupture from a US Navy Night Hawk helicopter. Up to 6 feet of right-lateral offset was able to be measured on the China Lake ...

Didn't know that about the Richter vs magnitude scale.

    I found a video explaining here... https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/magnitudes_moment_magnitude_explained

Where did you find that fault zone graphic? Is that an ap of some sort?

You mean the state office is the one thats inept and slow? Get out of town!!!!!!

I heard from a HAM radio operator in Vegas the day after the quake that they got lots of radio traffic the day of the quake and the day after-people who couldn't get cell phone calls or text messages out.

Cellular systems are not very robust but texting works on a different system and is more robust, meaning its easier to get texts through after these quakes.

Besides mudslides, landslides, fires, extreme pollution and earthquakes, it seems as if they have a volcano problem too. California is literally falling apart...

You forgot the California freedom to block a city side walk with a tent and foul the area with human feces and urine.

Look, apparently God was striking California for being sh*theads....

the sh*theads who don't live here thought he was striking "liberals"....

they hate liberals and Californians and celebrate disasters and suffering and misery....

the trouble is, God didn't strike liberal Californians, He struck Trump voters.

So you see, the point isn't really about God or California or liberals or Earthquakes....

it's about the hateful Trump supporting low class right who play partisan politics even when it comes to disasters, even when they don't realize they are actually crapping on their own team.

Of course, when they do realize it, they change the narrative, as you are attempting to do.

It's a sad sad game, and I don't know how they can stand themselves. It's like Trump....just a bunch of hateful bullying human embarrassments.

    Crazy...

NASA Maps Surface Changes From California Quakes

Damage from two strong earthquakes that rattled Southern California on July 4 and July 5 - a magnitude 6.4 and a magnitude 7.1, respectively - can be seen from space. The epicenter of the quakes was near the city of Ridgecrest, about 150 miles (241 kilometers) northeast of Los Angeles. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 7.1 quake was one of the largest to hit the region in some 40 years.

The Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis (ARIA) team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, used synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from the ALOS-2 satellite to produce a map showing surface displacement from the earthquakes. The post-quake imagery was acquired on July 8, 2019, and compared with April 8, 2018, data from the same region.

Each color cycle represents 4.8 inches (12 centimeters) of ground displacement either toward or away from the satellite. The linear features that cut the color fringes in the southeast indicate likely locations of surface rupture caused by the earthquakes, and the "noisy" areas in the northwest may indicate locations where the ground surface was disturbed by them.

Hi, US Conservative! No, it isn't from an ap. I googled: garlock and san andreas fault map , and in "images" the maps appeared.

I was once scolded by good, old Jim Berkland, an excellent predictor of earthquakes but who sadly has passed away, for pointing out what is essentially the uselessness of using "Richter" on earthquakes greater than ML6.0. He encouraged me instead to simply bow to the commonly-used convention and not worry about it. I do miss him greatly! His accuracy was absolutely uncanny, and he predicted one earthquake after another without much error at all, over years! What always amazed me was that Jim didn't have a Ph.D... he was a 'geologist', pure and simple, but he sure as hell understood how to predict earthquakes.... Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Berkland

BTW, my seismology "idols" include Dr. Kerry Sieh (the 'father' of paleoseismology), Caltech; Dr. Lucy Jones, Caltech; and, Dr. Brian Atwater, Univ. of Washington, whose predictions about earthquakes and tsunamis that will occur someday in Oregon and Washington State absolutely DWARF anything that will happen in California!
