Every school should have the local police, or sheriff's department do a threat assessment, put metal detectors at every entrance/exit and hire retired law enforcement, or military that have a license to carry to guard those during school hours.

The police will tell you that in a public shooting, when someone shows up and starts shooting back, they always flee. This will of course cost more money for school districts. If anyone has a better plan, then let's hear it!

    LOL!

I'm guessing you're for the 2nd amendment even if it requires a police state.

THEY MAY TAKE OUR FREEDOM, BUT THEY'LL NEVER TAKE OUR GUNS!!

It's not uncommon for US citizens to embrace the Constitution. It's a rather important foundational document of the United States of America.

Libs have insured ‘gun free zones’ are killing zones by fighting letting trained personnel access to defensive weapons on campus. The first 5 minutes are the most important as the police arrive after the fact.

Even if you could ban guns tomorrow, what are you going for the next 50 years while the 300 million guns already in the US disappear?

Not to mention that you can make your own gun in a 3D printer now.

It seems pretty clear to me that there are two choices: Either make campuses as secure as a prison, or quit sending children to schools and school at home with internet schools.

Even small groups of neighborhood kids could meet at a common place. But this would eliminate having hundreds of children sitting like ducks in a pond.

There is no way the gun problem will go away for a very long time, no matter what is done.

Internet schools would drastically reduce the cost of education. So there is that too!

Errr....if the FBI had done its job the Florida shooting would have been prevented. The local police had been called on Cruz many times and yet it did nothing to stop it.

'Hey, I know, let's hang signs that establish our schools as gun-free zones'

this ^^ is the mentality the adults are forced to deal with.

That's not practical. Its on a par with suggestions that in the run up to 9-11 the Bush Admin. should've put air marshals on every airliner flight.

What you are suggesting would be utterly impossible with every school in the United States. IIRC in the United States there are tens of millions of school buildings but only around one million law enforcement personnel of all types around the U.S.

I too am worried about possible 4th Amendment Rights abuses with the additional surveillance & searching required to make school halls safe but my understanding is that the 2nd Amendment was written to preclude the establishment of a Police State.
Historically, among the first things a totalitarian regime does to establish itself is to disarm its citizens..

I agree. A good start for every school in the U.S. should start with an ALICE Threat Assessment Evaluation. Then implement those recommendations that the have evaluated. The installation of CCTV within and around the school is a requirement and so should key card entrances and an active view of the area along with security personnel (preferably retired LEO's or Military) as reception for visitors entering the building(s). It's no the end all be all, but better than gun free zones or no one at all. As a retired Facilities Manager I know it works.

Petition your federal legislators to enact common sense and pragmatic laws which will contain and stop criminal, the emotional and psychologically impaired and others who pose a threat to the safety and security of this nation and it's people.

On the human side, you can not stop crime, or criminality. As far as psychology and mentally impaired are concerned you have to ask why psychiatric facilities for long term mentally impaired was closed. By opening more psychiatric facilities there would be less homeless and much less mentally disturbed people on the streets.

It is a civil rights violation to impose restrictions on or restrain individuals prior to commission of a crime, and Trump threw out Obama's mental stability requirement for gun possession. . . . Damage control preventive measures such as outlawing guns that are designed to be WMD's would be a good start.

Also, the fact that these mass shootings ALWAYS occur in crowded locations may help to simplify potential partial solutions.

Everything is a straw man in politics.

I believe you are incorrect. When purchasing a weapon the purchaser must fill out a required form. One of the questions within the form that must be answered refers to mental stability, the other is about felonies. It's up to the information within the computer to have a go or no go on the purchase. If there's garbage in you'll get garbage out. Therefore it's incumbent of the government's Federal Computer System to run a comprehensive background check. To date they have failed.

Isn't freedom and liberty also embraced in the constitution?
It has been said by quite a few, to turn our society into a police state. Armed personnel at schools. Which then should include most public spaces.

President Donald Trump quietly signed a bill into law Tuesday rolling back an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to purchase a gun.
