I bought my first computer to play Doom. Yes, back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. First person shooters have been slowly getting more console-ish. That usually means they have a weird control layout on the keyboard, the port is buggy, and the orientation is towards teens. I haven't been a teen in half a century. My opinion is that gaming peaked in Skyrim. I have been waiting for years for another game I actually liked, and nothing. So I still play Skyrim. Mine is heavily modified. I used to keep it fresh by constantly changing it with Nexus. (Nexus is a modding community that produces everything from massive additions to the game, to graphics mods to make it look prettier. But they switched to Discord, and I can't figure out how to make that work). Anyway, so not the point. Part of getting to the big boss fight of the game is ending the civil war. You can join a side, but I find that thoroughly annoying. You have to bribe, pickpocket and blackmail, and I don't play games to do that. The alternative is a truce, a temp peace treaty. If I wanted to get involved in crap like that, I could have worked in an office and made good money. Uggh. I usually take the middle road in the negotiations, but the rebels are a real pain in the ass, so this time I ruled against them one step too much. It worked long enough to get me to the boss fight, but that's it. I'm fighting my way through to the boss now, Alduin, "the world eater". Which I like, but I wanted to b*tch a little. Not even perfection is perfect.
You don't like bribing and blackmail? I thought that was what gaming was all about. Last game I played and liked was SimCity. Do they still make it? I don't mean the one where Sims HAVE a city but the one where you build a city. I think the Sims are silly, an ersatz porno game without sex.
Never played it, but I imagine there must be something like it. I like a good fight. Speaking of which, I've done all the big boss fights, time to start over. I have several cheat chests that get me up to speed fast. The pace of the unmodified game is agonisingly slow.
Pong was a console game, so not really a computer game. Maybe digital would be a better word. That takes us back to the 1960s.
The new elder scrolls game will be out soon, they already announced it. But if you like Skyrim there are plenty more to play. Try their online game which is really good or the Fallout series or any of the new assassin creed games. Red dead redemption is amazing and the best of all is Cyberpunk 2077 coming out this month. Skyrim was great but even with mods it's very dated now. And unless you have a top of the line rig I would switch to the new consoles which are probably more powerful then your computer. They are actually easier to play on console, you only have an advantage on PC with shooters simply because of better framerate.
The buzz is Elder Scrolls 6 won't be out for years, they're working on a different game right now. I just bought Fallout 4, and it's ok so far. I didn't like Elder Scrolls Online. The Assassin Creed games always have a bug that makes them either unplayable or not worth bothering with on PC. I ought to try Red Dead, not really a fan of Westerns. I am almost 70. I actually bought that Sony one, looked good but I hate the controller with a passion. I also hate the crappy third rate port to PC many game companies do. I'm opposed to the death penalty, except for crappy ports to PC.
They've already previewed Elder Scrolls six which the never do without it being close. If they stick to pattern it should be around this time next year.
Skyrim is a good game to "peak" on. And, honestly, as with most of the Elder Scrolls games, I didn't really focus so much on the "core" story arch. I normally spend a while playing it, keep adding mods, then get bored with how much the mods have changed the game to the point that it is unrecognizable, and then start back over. These days I try to stick with mods that just get rid of the annoying forehead wrinkles that the humanoid female characters have for some reason. Leveling and character design in this one was far superior to previous Elder Scrolls games. The only time I really started regretting a character build is when I went full stealth archer -- way too powerful.
Fallout 4 imo is just the sci-fi version of Skyrim. One is my #1 fav FPRPG, the other is my #2 fav, and I cant say which is which. Im with you on the bribes and pickpocketing- not a fan. Tho I don't recall needing to do either to get through it (sided with rebels). Tho it also has been a few years... On a side note, I maxed out my sheild/block skill in early game by finding a wolf and a crevice in a mountainside, set a weight on my block key and F'ed off for a good while. After a couple times of that I was pretty much invincible while blocking until mid-game or so. Not sure if thats cheating or not...
Pretty sure playstation can use mouse/keyboard. I got a mouse/keyboard to mostly work on the original Xbox to play Halo multiplayer. Sniping folks with a mouse while they're trying to use thumbsticks is a riot, but like I said, it only mostly worked, as in I would periodically throw a random grenade or move in a random direction when it bugged out, which was fairly aggravating. Still better than a damn controller tho.
To me Skyrim was disappointing on many ways, a lot of NPC had few lines of dialogues and difficulty isn't really well balanced even if you play on legendary. However it's a nice sandbox to make what you want with it. Furthermore the music is really nice and I really liked the world building and the design of the nature. Talking to NPCs wasn't interesting howevet exploring all the places were.
There was a book that gave you skill points across the board and there was a bug where you could drop it and put it back then read it again for unlimited skills in everything. I gave myself like 10 million hps and just explored. I believe they patched that at some point but I could one shot anything in the game and never die.
I love rpg video games, grew up on them in the 90s. And Skyrim is therefore right up my alley. I've tried getting into it on 4 separate occasions now - because I keep telling to myself "this is a game I love, i just have to power through the beginning until i get into it". So far, no luck. I agree that many NPC's seem to lack dialogue options to make them more interesting.
It's interesting how often I like to go back into Skyrim and replay portions of the game. Sometimes I just like to wander around and look at the gorgeous scenery and get lost in that 'world' or putter around in the 'houses' I bought and built. It's so much more interesting than THIS world is in 2020.... If nothing else, I prefer the world of Skyrim because THERE, at least, the damned government(s) have to pay attention to even my EXISTENCE beyond being something to extract tax money from. I have to go back to the 1980's to remember a time when the United States cared about people who were actual TAXPAYERS, who actually paid a true 'fair-share' of the taxes in this country. Now, all the government does is pander to the über-rich, or, to mobs of welfare-sucking bums and parasites....
There are mods for everything in Skyrim, including dialogue. The one dialogue mod I tried wasn't impressive, but it helped. I've got about 40 mods that improve things, I have a lot of cheat chests that cut down on the drudge work in the game, etc. Try the Sophia follower. I have one mod that starts the game in random places. I then need to get to Riverwood to start the game. Which can be tough. But once I get there I have an enchantment chest that gives me most spells and enchantments and boosts enchanting to over 40. I have another one there with a dragonbone bow which I enchant with a Chaos spell. So the first time I use the bow, I'm doing significant damage. So I don't need to go through a hundred hours of drudgery to get to be able to do reasonable damage. One of the items in one of the chests is that cloak that the president of the magic college wears. You can disenchant that and put it on a ring or armor. If you do magic, that's a huge help, esp. if you enchant 2 or more items with that spell.
Most of the mods are to cut down the drudgery. The many, many hours picking flowers and forging daggers to build your level up to the point where you can fight the tougher bad guys. One of the mods I have makes the bad guys fight a little better.
I actually enjoyed all of that as it was part of the experience. It gave me a greater sense of accomplishment when I did complete them.
