I've been toying with the idea of starting a political podcast/live show for a couple of months now... but want to do a little research on it first. I'm curious: 1.) What do you consider your personal limit for listening to a show/podcast? Is there a set time? Is it based on the quality of the discussion? 2.) Would you personally be interested in participating in one of these programs to discuss issues? 3.) What sort of issues would you be interested in discussing, or, hearing about? 4.) Do you have any concerns that might make you shy away from this? If so, can you explain them? Ideally I'd like to have a stable place to launch this from, and while there are some unreasonable people here, I feel like there are more reasonable people than unreasonable, including the people that don't talk very often. I'm genuinely interested in feedback, both positive and negative on this topic.
1) Depends. Politics, probably an hour. 30 minutes isn't enough time to really debate an issue IMO. Sports podcasts I can listen to all day 2) Probably 3) Foreign policy/military operations, legalization of pot, any real topics that are fun to debate (staying current obviously) 4a)Make me shy away from listening, or contributing? To make me shy away from listening to it, it'd have to be really boring. I need to hear energy from the individuals talking. Jokes...etc. 4b)To make me shy away from contributing? Army OPSEC
I think 20 to 30 minutes is probably long enough. People who listen to podcasts are probably also listening to other podcasts so listening time is limited.
1. I listen to several podcasts at the moment and an hour is usually my limited based upon time available to me. 2. Not at this time, but maybe in the future 3. From the political spectrum really anything foreign or domestic as long as it was real thing and impacts real live. 4. A Podcast with a bunch of opinions and no facts, and it would be best if the facts were mutli-sourced and the multiple sources didn't refer back to a single source for the story.
Yeah, this was my concern. I generally listen to several podcasts, and one of the ones I like listening to is Joe Rogan, but his tend to go really, really long so I have to break it up over multiple days. Either way, I appreciate the insight everyone's given me so far, interested to hear more.
See I disagree with number 4. I think using a fact as a talking point is good, but the opinions are what I want to hear. Just me though
My intention was to stress a mix of them. Too many opinions and it becomes something of a clown fiesta where you just have one person shouting another down. Too many facts and it would sound like a Ben Stein lecture. Just my opinion though, glad to see there's a mix.
The pod casts I love the most are all featured the same way. Here's the topic, what are your thoughts. Really easy layouts that turn into good discussion.
This site would benefit greatly from AV chat, & live Podcasts for issue debate/discussion. Really would have to have a more slender set of rules though.... Unlike the Magna Carta list for the board, or roughly 80% of the participating membership would likely end up banned.
So, what I was thinking is this: Panel of four people. I'd remain consistent and serve as something as a moderator or conversational guide. Would lay out what the topic is, or rather, the starting point, and from there, simply ask questions to keep the conversation rolling in the right direction/expand on certain topics. Really the only rule would end up being "if you're asked to do something, be respectful and do it." ie) @ArmySoldier - "We all know that J.Idallian is a left wing mouthpiece, and has a few extra chromosomes, but the topic is about Stem Cell Research.. let's circle back to that." The end result would people that are inflammatory just don't get invited back really. I don't want to have a ruleset or anything of that nature, just a conversation. It'll get heated at times I'm sure, but as long as you have someone around that's just a dedicated moderator, I feel like most of it could be handled. Thoughts?
I think it would be fantastic. This is essentially how Liveleak started their AV chat. Years before their site started to dieded. First, outside of their on site text format, they had a PalTalk room, that was started by members of LL .... As a matter of fact, back in the day, many sites looking to expand their "Social Networking" type stuff, followed this practice. Your plan is actually lots more gooder, since it's not directly tied to staff here.... I presume.
Count me in. My commentary reads better with sound anyway. Be sure to add a donations button to whatever you launch. Always willing to toss some coins in the plate.
Sounds good on paper. However, keep in mind that without the occasional blowup argument and drama, it can get real boring. I look forward to Mike and Mike in the morning when Stephen A Smith is going to be on because I know it's going to be animated. Same with my political podcasts. That's just my taste though.
Indeed. The Dramtasticism would need to be watched, but, using the PalTalk format as a guide, IP boots/bans are an easy enough fix.
That'll depend on how popular it gets to be honest, for now I just want a good base, and good conversations. We'll see what happens down the road. I'm already plotting on having some colorful folks on. I'm sure there will be sparks.
There's this awesome podcast from my college that isn't around anymore. They had 4 friends just sit and talk politics over a few beers. It was great. Their arguments were hilarious
Yea inbox me with details. Depending on how you develop soundbites, I'm happy to help some when I can
ALWAYS a blast, getting blasted, & discussing issues. As a matter of fact, Live interaction actually provides for better interaction (usually) between members not only during the casts, or AV chat sessions, but on the board as well. Text doesn't translate well when trying to gain insight into other member's POVs
I'd considered doing something a little more "lounge style" but didn't know how well it would translate over to a political forum to be honest. Definitely something else to consider.
Up until the Haxzors incident @ LL, it translated great, LL @ the time, was quite a Political hotbed of activity...A few AssHats, but easily corrected.
Well I certainly don't want a script, to me that defeats the point. I want to do this because I want to hear other people's viewpoints, learn and laugh a little along the way. If I script it all out it's just another job I'm not getting paid for, and that's a big no thanks.
My limit would be tied to my level of interest on the subject matter and the objectivity and communicative quality of the host. Sure. Whatever. I like to learn thus I am open to many different subjects and concepts. Lack of objectivity is a deal breaker for me. I also value facts over anecdotes.
