So last week I went on a 5 day camping trip to my families favorite spot. The whole cove type area I usually camp in was taken by campers that were just parked, not camping, just parked to save spots.

The closest event I could think of that would require reserving a spot is the Bow hunt that was 3 weeks away. Then the hunt lasts for almost a month. So these campers were there blocking spots for how long before me, then till the hunt, then during the hunt. My states law allows for 14 day parks then they must be moved. So these guys were in clear violation.

Just as a side note I am no rat so won’t call them in. I also talked to them
Later in the camp when they came to check on it. they were in fact parking it for the bow hunt.

Anyway, I was stewing about this while setting up my camp. I was joking around about putting an arrow into their tire just to add a bit of irony to their total jerk move. My oldest boy (13) said let’s do it! I laughed and told him there’s good odds that there is a trail cam watching their camps. So that would be a horrible idea.

then my youngest (8) piped in. He informed us without any of our help that the NSA could be listening or watching on our phones right now. We all got a laugh out of this cause we had no service anyway.

I asked him where he heard that and he told me he couldn’t remember but it’s true. So how did he hear this? I’m not apposed to him knowing but what kind of life would it be to grow up and know this then joke about it as if it’s 100% okay and doesn’t violate our rights.

Our kids, our very own kids will know this as normal. Ronald Reagan said freedom is only a generation away from being lost. It never sounded more true when my son of the next generation spoke of this like it was nothing new and completely okay.

so my question to you is: Do you support the NSA Spying?

Doesn't matter, you need a faraday cage, like a microwave oven that does not leak.

It's just me... so they won't hear much, with the exception of me sometimes yelling back at draconian news reports.

The NSA focuses its attention where it suspects a threat. Im sure it would be 'wild conspiracy theory' to suggest why our govt suspects the entire population as a potential threat... but clearly it does.

You’re right. But none of us wouldn’t be honest if we said that this hasn’t even instilled doubts about the fairness of our elections. This allows whoever in power to unmask people and I believe that has shown true in recent elections.

They are doing the exact same thing Nixon did but on a much broader scale. If programs like this can leave doubts in elections then are they being used for us or against us. I fear this will never end because those in power will enjoy this too much to end it.

I truly think it’s time we had an honest discussion as a nation if we want to allow this to continue. I also think Snowden needs a pardon for bringing this to light.

Somewhat true but they still have an IP for every phone and a microphone. We are cornered in this. The fact my 1st grader spoke of this truly struck me hard. He should be concerned about throwing a baseball and how to ride a motorcycle, or his math, or his social skills. Not how the NSA Spying will alter his personal perception if the wrong things in his adolescence comes to light. I truly can’t believe he knew this. I’m honestly dumbfounded

My state houses an NSA data plant (as I call it). I’m truly debating on writing my governor about this story. This really did hit me hard

I had to go back to read your OP. I initially thought your 13 yo said that. I think it would creep me out if my kid said that as a first grader too,

P.S. At 11 years old, my son told me he was reading about tax evasion. Like you, at the time I couldn't even understand how he knew what that was.

Yeah he’s actually going into 2nd grade. I tried to type his age as 8 but the parentheses made it come out as an emoji. My bad

Want to hear the craziest part? He is super smart (it's not just parental bias. Like me, he's aced all the classes and tests). I told him that I have no interest in going to jail and he said (and I quote verbatim) "That's fine. I can do your taxes for you and they won't send me to prison because I'm a kid." All I could say in that moment was "Son, please use your powers for good." ;-)

I don’t want to turn this into an Edward Snowden glory page but did you know he hacked into a nuclear company at the age of 13 then called them to tell them where their flaw was? Intelligence is an amazing thing that not everyone gets to hold.

Yep. Mental health experts have determined there is something like "the Einstein gene". I was always an Honor Roll student but my son is off the charts. Of course, that gets balanced out in free society with others vying for top billing as Darwin Award recipients. ;-)

Are you asking about what the NSA actually does or what your pre-teen son read from some forgotten source but you apparently blindly believed without question (and, more worryingly, appear to be encouraging him to blindly believe without question)?

OK so what evidence do you have that the NSA is actually spying on the domestic communications of US citizens. Domestic being the key word.

I ask because legally the NSA has no authority to monitor internal communications with the geographic bounds of the USA. Not only would any such interceptions be illegal and therefore not admissible in a court of law but any official who ordered, over sighted or knowingly conducted such monitoring would be guilty of criminal acts punishable by years in prison.

Life is not a Hollywood movie. Any monitoring of your families communications within the USA has to be conducted by domestic law enforcement after a warrant for the interception has been issued by a Judge. Barring exceptional life threatening or emergency situations its that simple. And even then any monitoring or analysis of say phone records would be severely time constrained and very specific. Think missing children etc.

Read the Snowden book. They do collect every bit of data almost down to the key strokes. They store it and supposedly don’t look at it till they get the authorization by a warrant that gets granted by the secret courts. The facts are that they can look at it without a warrant. Snowden claims they (those who work at the NSA) have looked at nudes and spied on those thy care about or are dating or want to date. That’s just one example of his witnessed abuse of this collected data.

I’m honestly shocked you’re asking me what they collect as if you trust some government source more than the man that actually told the world about it going on behind our backs.
