Trump is a free trader. How would you bring about free trade with China?

sorry, slashing revenues causes deficits and debt to rise. Republicans do it every time they are in power.

you mean they do it when they are in power with Democrats. IF they were really in power they'd cut govt as massively as the electorate would allow. Do you understand?

Well, as a member of the board right wing contingent, I do think of the right as being libertarian. On that note, I also don't think Trump should have been the Republican nominee.

You can keep saying it, but you are just as wrong as you were every other time you said it. You are aware that China is not the only country he's been anti-trade with, yes? There's also our allies like Canada and the UK. Hell, he's even threatening German cars because he thinks there are too many here. You can't in all seriousness and honesty call that capitalist, free trade, or small-government.

Hell, if you were actually small government you would want to do the Constitutional thing and leave tariffs up to CONGRESS, not the President. How can you be small-government if you don't even respect the separation of powers?

You say you like low taxes . . . but you celebrate Trump for unilaterally creating new taxes on trade any time he feels like it.

Trump isn't a free trader. No free trader would want to start a trade war and crow about it (well, tweet about it).

Not if it wrecks our economic progress and causes the growth to stall.

You keep talking about China. If China were the only country he attacked trade with, then maybe you would have a point. It isn't. He isn't threatening tariffs on German cars to bring about free trade with China. As far as China goes, he isn't just doing it for "free trade," he is doing it for what it calls "fair trade": government mandated "correction" of the free market to eliminate trade deficits. That's not free trade, capitalist, or small-government. But I won't hold my breath on you actually addressing any of that if you think basic critical thinking is "kindergarten" stuff.

Republicans aren't protectionist. Trumpists are. Also, it's interesting to watch things change. It used to be the progressives that were protectionist.

    1) separation of powers and small govt are not the same
    2) tariffs come and go overnight so not a matter for slow moving Congress to handle

I understand this is the canned response you've been provided, but anyone who has followed Trump and listened to what he's actually said knows he isn't free trade. Hell, his new excuse that he is raising tariffs in order to eliminate tariffs is just that: a NEW excuses that it is at odds with his early excuses about government-mandated "fair" trade instead of free trade.

And, once again, even if this were a good idea and even if you were right about his motives, someone who truly supports small government would AT LEAST want to follow the Constitution and have CONGRESS institute these tariffs.

No kidding! Hell, the only economic source that Trump used on the campaign trail to defend tariffs was a liberal think tank! Ugh, I keep trying to hold out hope that Republicans will take back control of their party. I'll definitely go back to voting in the Republican primaries if there is any sign of that.

You are saying that he is against free trade because he is for free trade. No, that makes no sense, and he's said before that his real motive for doing this is for "fair" trade instead of free trade, meaning government interference to "correct" free trade deficits.

Lol, Congress is too slow . . . so you want to flush the Constitution down the crapper . . . and you still pretend you are small-government? Really? Are you funnin' again?

For the millionth time, he's not trying to bring about free trade. He's trying to bring about government-controlled "fair" trade because he thinks there are too many German cars in the US.
