I think asking sometime to custom make an item such as a wedding cake that expressly guess against your beliefs should qualify as a legitimate cause.

A grocery store sells products manufactured by someone else normally, and they aren't generally customized like a wedding cake.

If you're asking someone to make something that goes against their beliefs that is different than asking a retailer to sell you an item for the asking price that was manufactured.

a bakery can. If a black female Jewish person walked into a Muslim bakery and ask them to make a giant cookie with the words Muhammad was gay on it they could refuse. It doesn't matter how many protected classes they belong to.

a bakery does not have to be a private club to refuse to make something specific for somebody.

Your comparison to grocery store is not a good one. A grocery store doesn't custom make items such as wedding cakes.

the several incidents we saw with bakeries we're not discrimination against gay people on the basis that they were gay. it was discrimination against the cake that they wanted. if you make custom cakes for a living you're allowed to do that.

If you own a bakery and you refuse to do anything involving blue frosting you're allowed to do that at your bakery. if someone wants a blue bar mitzvah cake you're not discriminating against Jewish people you're discriminating against blue.

 

We agree. I may not have been clear enough. A Nazi is a member of a political party, and his association is completely protected by law. Our constitution protects his right to affiliate with the National Socialist party just as it protects me as a Democrat. The legislature cannot pass laws on that basis. He gets to march, wear his swastika, to speak, to write what he chooses to promote his version of a new American order. , , Pedophilia is not illegal either, but sexual activity and sexually predatory behavior is prohibited between adults and minors.

I find it hard to believe this discussion has gone on for so long. Makes me want to scream ‘If you don’t like the bigot refusing your custom go somewhere else’ Simple really. Why, I keep asking, would anyone want to have a wedding cake sitting in front of them at their reception knowing the people who made it think you belong in hell?

 

Excellent point most people would just go to different bakery.

It seems like some people don't like the idea of someone that was objecting to their relationship. I personally could care less.
