Abandoned Pit Bull Nurses Newborn Kitten, Treats Her 'As Her Own'

The Huffington Post | By Kimberly Yam | Posted: 03/26/2015 6:59 pm EDT
    Excerpts:

"Two very different animals have found comfort in one another. A worker from animal rescue group Dallas Dog RR came across an abandoned pit bull on the side of the road in Texas, last week, according to Yahoo News. The worker picked it up with the intention of getting it care, but realized the dog wasn't alone. A bystander mentioned that a kitten had been lying in the same spot where the pooch was found.

The days-old kitten was also picked up by the worker, who said the young cat latched on to the canine and began nursing. The pit bull and kitten, now appropriately named Pitty and Kitty, were brought to the Mercy Animal Clinic, where they've been recovering well and are inseparable, their bond is so strong that the doctor has stipulated that the two must be adopted together."

    .....

"In this particular area, there's a lot of strays, so my best guess is that the mother pit bull had a litter of pups and they died or weened and she still had milk," Hamlin told the Dodo. "And the kitten's mother, who just had her -- well, something must have happened to her, and this kitten was left behind. The pit bull probably found her and took it as her own." Though Hamlin takes Kitty home every night to be bottle fed (Pitty's milk has dried up and she can no longer nurse the cat), the doctor told HuffPost that the animal duo has established a morning routine filled with a good dose of TLC.

"The morning reunion between Kitty and Pitty is always heartwarming with Pitty giving Kitty a morning bath and, once Pitty lies down, Kitty still attaching herself to a - now nonfunctional - nipple. Very cute," he told HuffPost. "Over my 28-year career, I've never seen anything like this," Hamlin, told the Dodo of the pair's strong connection. It is unclear how the two found each other, however, Hamlin suspects that the pair came together when they needed one another most."

    ......

IMO: Sometimes the whole animal world are given more humanity, caring, and brains than humans possess. Every day we see neglected children in need of love, warmth, and a keen knowledge of who they are, but get little or no help from parents or society.

They are the cast-offs, while misguided Americans loiter around women's clinics screaming for the purported life of a fetus about to be aborted, but there are plenty of children already born that need love, support, and it should be the kind of love that an abandoned pit bull gives automatically to a tiny newborn kitten, with no agenda.

Cool story from Huff & Puff.

As for the personal commentary, I find it odd to see the word humanity used when comparing a kitten that struggled for its life and making it to an abortion clinic where there is virtually no chance at life regardless of the struggle.

    Do animals have abortion clinics?

Bbeyond the abortion commentary.... if I see a pitbull un secured..... my hand is on my gun.... if it makes any movement towards me, I will draw and shoot the animal if I am not convinced he is going the other way.

If you are the owner and mad at that... too bad.... learn to keep your wild animal secure.

I hate when owners can't control their dogs and then get upset when you defend yourself or family against them. I have kicked many of smaller dogs in the ribs that were too close for comfort making my leashed dog upset on our walks.... But I'm not able to stop a pit bull like I am a smaller dog. Smith and Wesson is able.

I believe animals have souls. Maybe not the brains humans possess, but the same consciousness.

I have a pit bull and two cats.

That dog is the most obedient dog ever. Of course, my father was a K9 handler so I picked up a thing or two along the way.

If you yell at her, she gets so sad and runs in the guest room.

All about how you raise them.

Finally a thread where I can agree with Agent!!!!!!! I agree, humans can learn something from the animal world regarding getting along with everyone.

My brother had a pitbull who used to share his food and his house with feral cats. He seemed to like the company. The ferals who hung out with him used him as protection so the mean tom cats in the area would not come after them. It was pretty smart of them truth be told.

This time I'll give you a 5 star rating, so you won't have to do it yourself - lol.....

Anyway, good topic and so much truth here about the animal kingdom and how they care for each other, even those who are born to be natural enemies of each other......

There used to be a weekly tv animal series that I never missed, but of course Hollywood got rid of it.. I remember the story of Miss Kitty, a momma cat who's kittens died, so she found abandoned pups, dognapped them and fed them..... a kitten and a bird who were close pals and played together, rolling around on the grass, etc.... when they get together as babies, they seem to lose their 'natural enemies' instinct........

Us humans can learn a lot from animals........

I've always felt that it's a shame that humans don't have the brains that animals do and their powerful instincts.......

    Don't know about their souls....

Martin Luther clearly thought so. I think it's beyond question. "He never wasted a leaf on a tree, do you think he would squander souls?" Kipling. God would not create perfect innocence if he didn't mean it to be eternal

I, for one, am not going if my pets won't be there. To hell with me.

Amy Tan did one of the best cartoon shows for kids on Chinese Cats I've yet seen

Naturally they took it off far too soon.

sounds great... until they eat a baby and you say the pitt-bull mantra of "what did you do to my dog, she/he never has done that before, you must have done something to it"

What a ridiculous piece of irrelevant nonsense.

The issue is dogs eating people.

The fact that some dog didn't actually eat a cat is of absolutely NO importance.

it's agenda for pit owners who are upset that people are rightfully concerned about their dogs being in the neighborhood.

    A dog is domesticated
A wolf is not, despite being part of the canine family.

A pitbull has had all of it's domestication bred out of it, despite the fact the owners refuse to believe it.

A wolf makes a great loyal pet until it snaps and rips your face off, too.

Wow. Please do us all a favor and turn over your Smith and Wesson.
You are a poor excuse for a gun owner and human.
Not every Pit is a man killer. And if you cant tell a good dog from bad and your only recourse is to shoot it, you are a dangerous person.

just this week, we had another "it's not the dog it's the owner" pitbull attack. 5 pittbulls walking the street, attacked a jogger and caused some pretty serious injuries. He will survive, but had he had a gun, you shoot the first one, and hope it scares off the other 4. Shoot as many as you can.

I always roll my eyes at pet owners like you that seem to think YOUR pet is the exception to the "bad pet" rule, when in reality, you are the biggest issue.

notice how you never hear about a pack of Yorkie terriers attacking a child... always pit bulls.

I said it on the discussion about the local dogs too. And it was brought up that yorkies are much more aggressive than pits... and I 100% agree.. I think I've been bitten by my friend's yorkie about 10 times.

it's not the aggressiveness of a pit that makes him dangerous
it's not that a pit is the strongest dog that makes him so dangerous

it's the combonation of both charector traits of that breed that makes it dangerous

I'd rather get shot by a bb gun everyday for the rest of my life than to get shot one time by a 9mm

out of a yorkie, and a pitty..... take a guess which one is the BB gun, and which is the 9mm

I have ZERO PROBLEM shooting your dog if it's not in it's yard, and acting aggressive in order to protect me and my family. Don't like it... control your dog

absolutely, how many students in my wife's class does she have to lose to pitbull attacks.... her current total, in 5 years of teaching..... 1. Where a pack of yorkies.... no wait, that never happens, a pack of 4 pitbulls that had bitten neighbor kids before, got out, and attacked him as he rode his bike in front of HIS house.

So I lose absolutely zero sleep over having my gun ready to shoot your agressive dog if you lack the ability to control it. Watching your anger as you watch me do it would simply be icing on top.

It is the size of their mouths not the nature of the dog which is why some breeds appear to be less aggressive than others. An aggressive Yorkie just isn't physically capable of doing that. It doesn't mean that Yorkies are somehow naturally less aggressive.
