Leanring that Charles Curtis, 31st Vice President of the United States under Herbert Hoover, was the son of an Indian Chief and 3/8 Native American.. I was inspired to go back and see why stock brokers started jumping out of windows in 1929.. Nancy Pelosi is OK with bolstering Wall Street right now.. I'm Not.

The 1928 United States presidential election was the 36th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 6, 1928. Republican Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover defeated the Democratic nominee, Governor Al Smith of New York. Hoover was the last Republican to win a presidential election until 1952.

After President Calvin Coolidge declined to seek reelection, Hoover emerged as his party's frontrunner. As Hoover's party opponents failed to unite around a candidate, Hoover received a large majority of the vote at the 1928 Republican National Convention. The strong state of the economy discouraged some Democrats from running, and Smith was nominated on the first ballot of the 1928 Democratic National Convention. Hoover and Smith had been widely known as potential presidential candidates long before the 1928 campaign, and both were generally regarded as outstanding leaders. Both were newcomers to the presidential race and presented in their person and record an appeal of unknown potency to the electorate. Both faced serious discontent within their respective parties' membership, and both lacked the wholehearted support of their parties' organization.[2]

In the end, the Republicans were identified with the booming economy of the 1920s, and Smith, a Roman Catholic, suffered politically from anti-Catholic prejudice, his opposition to Prohibition, and his association with the legacy of corruption by Tammany Hall. Hoover won a third straight Republican landslide and made substantial inroads in the traditionally-Democratic Solid South by winning several states that had not voted for a Republican since the end of Reconstruction. Hoover's victory made him the first president born west of the Mississippi River, and he is the most recent sitting member of the Cabinet to win a major party's presidential nomination.

So Basically America blamed the Calvin Coolidge's mishandling of the economy which caused the great Depression.. Ended support for the Republican Party across America... Hoover was a Last Republican President in many states for a long time.

It was the last election in which the Republicans won North Carolina until 1968; the last in which they won Kentucky and West Virginia until 1956; the last in which they won Arizona, California, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington until 1952; the last in which they won Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Oregon until 1948; the last in which they won Ohio, Wisconsin, and Wyoming until 1944; and the last in which they won Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota until 1940. As of 2016, it remains the last election in which the Republican candidate carried the three contiguous counties of Saint Louis County, Minnesota; Carlton County, Minnesota; and Douglas County, Wisconsin; and the last until Donald Trump in 2016 in which the Republicans carried neighboring Itasca County, Minnesota; Columbia County, Oregon; or Grays Harbor County, Washington.[26] It is also the last time that Wayne County, Michigan supported a Republican candidate and the only time since 1908 that Republicans have carried Orange County, North Carolina.[26]

Hoover lost to FDR because he used the Army to attack the Bonus Army, using bayonets, as well as his mis-handling of the Depression. The economy turned around almost immediately on FDR's election and was back at 1928 levels by 1937, though with unemployment relatively high. It slumped a little because of the Supreme Court battles that year, but went back to rising again later in the year, right up to the war. Republicans and Roosevelt bashers try to tell a different story, but they end up contradicting themselves and theirown economic ideology by claiming 'the war bailed us out', never mind their sniveling about FDR's 'govt spending was bad', as if the WW II spending wasn't also govt spending; they end up actually saying FDR just didn't spend nearly enough, but they think nobody noticed their cognitive dissonance.

FDR was just a much better leader than Republicans could offer; no surprise since most of their wealthy backers were hiding out on their private estates behind private armies and spent the Depression screaming for the Feds to shoot down all those annoying proles in Hoovervilles making them look bad.

The great Depression of 29 is Calvin Coolidges fault?? Thanks for sharing history.. This forum is well educated.

    FDR defeated Hoover in 32??

By a landslide.. The 1932 United States presidential election was the 37th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 8, 1932. The election took place against the backdrop of the Great Depression. Incumbent Republican President Herbert Hoover was defeated in a landslide by Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Governor of New York and the vice presidential nominee of the 1920 presidential election. Hoover was the last elected incumbent president to lose reelection until Jimmy Carter 48 years later. The election marked the effective end of the Fourth Party System, which had been dominated by Republicans.

Doesn't bode well for Trump at all.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1932_United_States_presidential_election

There were several reasons for the Depression, but Coolidge, like the Senate and Congress, could have put a brake on the pyramid schemes, yes, and so could the Fed Reserve.

Elected in '32; took the oath in '33.

He has ups and downs; at this point it looks to me like both sides are trying to lose ... lol If he keeps pandering to the establishment GOP types he will definitely lose; most of those who elected him were sending a message to the RNC as well as the DNC. He goes after the Post Office and Social Security just to suck up to the Right wing sociopaths he will lose in a landslide. A lot of grand maws are feeding their grandkids and gret grandkids these days.
