A 69-year-old Air Force veteran said he quit his North Carolina supermarket job because his manager told him to stop wearing a face mask printed with an American flag.

Gary Dean, of Havelock, N.C., worked at the local Food Lion until Tuesday, when he was told he had to ditch the flag mask because someone had complained.https://www.foxnews.com/us/air-force-vet-quits-food-lion-american-flag-face-mask?ocid=uxbndlbing

It's getting tougher and tougher to be an American these days. Food Lion, a Delhaize French company, deciding they want to join the Culture Wars will no longer get another red copper out of me. They are closest to my house but I can go a half-mile farther to do my shopping. Guess I have to add them to Starbucks and Facebook as companies I no longer support. Would be interested if there are other companies who think we should bend are values to their Cancellation Culture Jihad.

It's that "liberal tolerance" platform that hates everything that is pro American. I am putting up a thin blue line flag just to piss off my liberal neighbors.

Unfortunately you listed Fox News as a source, thus regardless of the truth of what occurred and the implications, most of what you'll soon see is, " FOX NEWS? OH DEAR GOD, FOX NEWS?". Some folks really get triggered by Fox News.

Some folk really fall for faux news bullshit, but most of us know it’s just a mouth piece for trump’s lies.

If that is the truth then you won't have any problem finding an article that proves this article false. Can we be expecting that anytime soon? Asking for a friend.

I hear something and I google it. It don't matter what source comes up I read them all. Unlike a lot of posters on here I'm not so narrow minded that I can look through a keyhole with both eyeballs.

It's usually Right wing types that complain about the weird ways people use the flag symbol.

I don't see this as anything other than "the customer is always right" nonsense. I'm sure somebody, somewhere has complained about all kinds of masks worn by employees. I doubt this would have been an issue for an American owned and operated company. I would give the customer the benefit of the doubt if it was any other symbol. However, they are in the wrong country if our NATIONAL FLAG is offensive.

Born and raised in Chicago. Lived there most of my life minus 7 years in North Carolina. That place is .... I'm sure I'll get banned for life if I completed that sentence.

Is this the kind of America you like, the kind where it is unsafe to wear American colors?

I wonder if it is unsafe to wear Russian colors in Mother Russia and if anyone ever objects to it? Would you know?

    So what?

It was a Clear Violation of Company Policy:

In a statement, Food Lion said it has "great respect for the American flag," but also has blanket policies banning writing, insignia and symbols "to ensure a consistent and professional representation of our associates inside of our stores."

He violated company policy. End of story.

Has he started a GoFundMe Page yet?

This "Woe is me" publicity is priceless.

The only thing I would have preferred is that he force them to fire him vs quitting on his own.

Make them put it on record.

Here's the same faux news bullshit from non-Fox affiliated mouthpieces:

US veteran quits job after being told he could not wear American flag face covering

North Carolina veteran quits job over American flag face covering

Air Force veteran quits job at supermarket over American flag controversy

    Any comments? :frustrated:

Just like the other 99.9% of news outlets are mouthpieces for Democrat LIES....Hitler took control of the media too, so that it was just his lies that were repeated over and over until the people were brainwashed. Let me know when Republicans control 99.9% and I will complain about that too.

He made a choice to quit his job and everyone is happy. Food Lion went belly up in Texas decades ago. They even left expired meat in the store to rot. I wouldn't shop there if it was next door.

If your public company in the United States bans the very flag of the country that provides you the freedoms you enjoy to profit from its citizens, then its citizens have the very same right to tell that company to piss off. Pretty simple.

I stand corrected. He violated company policy so the request to remove it was fair. However, I don't believe he was wrong or is playing the "Woe is me" card. He just stated his opinion about the situation and made it clear by quitting. People rarely stand up for what they believe in so it's nice to read an article about someone not allowing others to encroach on his boundaries.

I see where you are coming from.

That said, if it bothers him that much, he can seek employment elsewhere.

He is obviously in an economic situation where he can quit the job "Out of Principle".

Many people don't have that luxury and would just get another mask that confirms to company policy.

    4 U.S. Code § 8.Respect for flag

    (d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery.
    (j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations.
I would not be in the least bit surprised if the complaint came from another vet with more respect for the flag.

Do you remember that movie "The Toy" with Jackie Gleason and Richard Pryor. Gleason's character's son wanted to *buy* Pryor's character to keep as a "toy." At one point, Gleason told his flunky to drop his pants to which he complied. When Gleason was out of earshot, Pryor asked the man "Is it that bad out there?" and the guy nodded.

So, yes, I agree...most people can't leave a job on principle. This might work in his favor as his story is out and somebody might offer him a job. Plus, I see job postings in almost all the big box stores by me. He'll land on his feet somewhere.

There may be a company policy that prohibits any type of messaging on an employees facemask.

That was Ned Betty as Gleason's right-hand man, a good point in movies. :)

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Dave Sunderland said he had been wearing Donald Trump hats to work at Newport News Shipbuilding every day for nearly four years.

He wore them — most recently one that said “Trump 2020” — from his car to his work site inside the gates, he said, and sometimes for a short safety meeting at the start of his shift.

Not anymore. Sunderland, 55, was fired last week after refusing to remove his hat before the safety meeting.https://popularmilitary.com/navy-shipbuilding-employee-fired-for-wearing-trump-2020-hat-at-work/

I guess what eats at me is that a very short time ago no body gave a rats a** what someone wore. Now you have all these sensitive snowflakes and s**tbirds who are so offended by freedom of speech.

What kind of "messaging" is an American flag? What kind of "message" does it convey?
