Do you think it was a mistake for Boeing to buy McDonnel? It appears the poisonous McDonnel way to do things infected Boeing

You're probably right. Like the big banks they're too big to fail. Last resort would be a public bail out.

Why? Because he portrayed a bunch of right wing Germans in a bad light? Remember that in the book (assuming you read it) lots of the Germans were portrayed pretty sympathetically.

I'm sure Boeing will trim some fat. But they won't need an auto style bailout. Same as Ford

Why not? You're practically a model for the German Chancellor.

Maybe you could be the German kid watching from his parents second story apartment window at an engagement between some M-1 Abrams tanks and three German anti tank missile carrying lightly armored vehicles. He is convinced that the "lighter German vehicles will outmaneuver and kill the big clumsy American tanks". He is excited to be watching the battle with hopes of recounting it to his classmates.

Unfortunately the explosions of the German vehicles shatters the windows of his home and the flying glass chops up his face and scars him for life.

    Bummer.

The 777 is a 2 engine jet, which has less sales than the A330 and completly loses against A350, its main competitor.

    Bad results for Boeing:
    https://www.theguardian.com/busines...x-crashes-at-19bn-as-it-slumps-to-annual-loss
Boeing has put the total cost of the two deadly crashes of its 737 Max airliners at nearly $19bn (£14.6bn) and slumped to its first annual loss in more than two decades.

The US manufacturing giant lost $1bn in the fourth quarter as revenue plunged 37% after the worldwide grounding of the 737 Max. The company has suspended new deliveries of the plane in the wake of the biggest crisis in its 103-year history. Over the whole of 2019 Boeing lost $636m.

Boeing set aside a further $9.2bn to cover the costs of airlines that have cancelled thousands of Max flights and towards higher costs related to compensation – doubling its estimate of the total financial hit from the crisis to $18.6bn.

Revenue tumbled to $17.9bn, far below Wall Street’s forecast of $21.7bn, according to a FactSet survey of analysts.

Latest report on the Boeing 737 scandal from the House committee:
    https://www.theguardian.com/busines...ture-concealment-fatal-737-max-crashes-report
    Quote:
A “culture of concealment”, cost cutting and “grossly insufficient” oversight led to two fatal crashes of Boeing 737 Max aircraft that claimed 346 lives, a congressional report has concluded.

The preliminary findings, issued by Democrats on the House transportation committee, conclude that Boeing “jeopardized the safety of the flying public” in its attempts to get the Max approved by regulators.

In a blistering 13-page report the committee found Boeing’s Max design “was marred by technical design failures, lack of transparency with both regulators and customers”.

Time for some corporate manslaughter charges.

This has been the trend for a great many years now. However, primarily in the area of passenger travel.

The 737 is still the largest selling passenger jet in history, and the trend for over 20 years has been to move away from the large 3-4 engine monsters and to smaller 2 engine jets. To put it simply, variants in air travel has caused the large beasts to make themselves obsolete. It makes more sense to use 2 smaller aircraft most times instead of 1 large one.

However, for freight, the larger 4 engine craft are still king. To give an idea, the 747-8 is the newest version. It can haul either 467 people, or over 6.300 cubic feet of cargo. And of the 154 deliveries so far, 107 have been freight models. Only 47 passenger models have been shipped.

And this is a pattern for all large aircraft today. And bulk carriers like the 747 line because there are plentiful replacement parts available for them.

The Airbus A380 has had it's own problems, the main competition for the 747. Almost half of those sold are flown by a single carrier, the UAE. And because they cancelled the freight version, they literally gave up that segment of the industry to Boeing on a silver platter.

But for passenger service, the 2 engine is indeed king unless a consistently full craft can be guaranteed. By the end of the year, the 3 longest non-stop flight routes will all be serviced by the 787, a more modern 2 engine aircraft when it comes to passenger service.

But for freight, the 4 engine jets will remain a force for decades to come. And freight is a significant segment of the aviation industry. But even this is starting to change. 7 years ago, the largest cargo carrier in the world (FedEx) retired the last of their 200+ 747s after using them as their backbone for over 40 years (but they still sell many upgrades for the craft that they designed for their own use over the decades). And they are in the process of retiring their 3 engine jets as well.

But FedEx is also primarily a US domestic freight carrier. The 747 remains the cargo aircraft of choice for international carriers.
