First ISIS/ISIL declared its own Islamic Caliphate in Syria and Iraq and now Boko Haram is getting in on the action in Nigeria:

Boko Harams leader said a northeast town seized by the insurgents earlier this month has been placed under an Islamic caliphate, in a video it gave reporters on Sunday. Thanks be to Allah who gave victory to our brethren in [the town of] Gwoza and made it part of the Islamic caliphate, Abubakar Shekau said in the 52-minute video. However, the military rejected the claim, saying in a statement that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nigerian state is still intact.

In a video last month, Shekau voiced support for Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State (IS) militants formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant who in late June declared himself the caliph and leader of Muslims everywhere. However, there was no indication from Shekau in the latest video that he was associating himself with Baghdadi. As such, it was not clear if Shekau was declaring himself to be a part of Baghdadis call or if he was referring to a separate Nigerian caliphate.

Shekau who has been designated a global terrorist by the US is shown in the video wearing military fatigues, with a Kalashnikov rifle strapped to his body. He alternates between Arabic and the Hausa language that is dominant in the region. He is pictured standing in front of three SUVs and flanked by four fighters, who are masked and armed. It is not clear when or where the video was filmed. There was no indication that Shekau was actually in Gwoza for the filming and his whereabouts remain unknown, but another unidentified fighter who speaks later in the video vowed that Boko Haram would keep control of the area. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs earlier this month confirmed reports that Gwoza was under rebel control.

Boko Haram is also believed to be in control of other areas near Gwoza in southern Borno, as well as large swathes of territory in northern Borno and at least one town in neighboring Yobe State. Mapping the precise areas that have fallen into Islamist hands is nearly impossible. There are few humanitarian workers on the ground in the northeast, travel is dangerous and the region has poor mobile phone coverage. Experts have described Boko Harams gains in recent weeks as unprecedented, saying the group was closer than ever to achieving its goal of carving out a strict Islamic state across northern Nigeria. However, many analysts believe the military still has the capacity to reverse the insurgents advance.

As much of the world remains focused on Islamic State and its horrific attacks in Paris, another radical band of extremists has, by one account, captured the infamous title of the worlds deadliest terrorist group: Boko Haram. Boko Haram, the militant group that has tortured Nigeria and its neighbours for years, was responsible for 6,664 deaths last year, more than any other terrorist group in the world, including Islamic State itself, which killed 6,073 people in 2014, according to a report released on Wednesday tracking terrorist attacks globally.

The death toll in Nigeria mounted on Wednesday, with a bombing in Kano state in northern Nigeria, not even a full day after Boko Haram was suspected in an explosion that killed and injured dozens in another nearby region. In Kano, authorities said two female suicide bombers detonated vests at a cellphone market at about 4pm local time, killing at least 12 people and wounding dozens. Witnesses and Red Cross officials said as many as 50 or 60 people died, though the number could not be independently confirmed. Officials accused Boko Haram in the attacks.

Stay vigilant

In a statement on Wednesday, President Muhammadu Buhari called for Nigerians to stay vigilant, saying that even his recently intensified military operation against Boko Haram could not prevent every attack. President Buhari reassures Nigerians that his administration is very much determined to wipe out Boko Haram in Nigeria and bring all perpetrators of these heinous crimes against humanity to justice, the release said.

Mr Buhari, who took office in May, ran on a platform of eliminating Boko Haram, which he has pledged to do by the end of December, as well as cutting back on corruption that has dogged the nation. This week, Mr Buhari accused the previous administrations national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki, of pocketing more than $2 billion (1.87 billion) that had been allocated for warplanes, helicopters and other military hardware to fight Boko Haram. Mr Dasuki has denied the allegations.

Well, I'm sure if Obama sets his mind to it he could probably 'contain" this JV team, too, and with no boots on the ground. Maybe he just hasn't read about it yet. Yea, that's gotta be it.

Under Obama immigration from Niger has doubled.

Congress set a limit on visas to be issued to African Muslims but as usual Obama ignored the law and issued twice as many than Congress has authorized.
