So, we are living in a post-truth political world, in which spin for political gain is more important than the truth. Now, this post-truth environment is colliding with reality, i.e. the coronavirus outbreak, in which nothing but the actual truth matter. Tell me, do you trust Trump that his administration is going to tell you only the facts about the virus? Can you trust him that he will not politicize the outbreak?

We already see on Fox news and other RW news sources that they are downplaying the outbreak and accusing the left of fear-mongering for political gain. Tell me, Trump fans, was it worth it, if you or one of your loved ones contracts the virus? Do you think Trump re-election is worth politicizing the response to the virus?

Personally, I am still optimistic that this can be contained. However, the recent appearance of a case WITHOUT known contacts means that the virus is out there in the community, and nobody knows who already has it and to who they spread it. This makes containment all of a sudden much less likely. Not fear mongering, but hard scientific fact on the dangers of asymptomatic transmission.

I'm not too worried about contracting it, fingers crossed. However, for those who do it's concerning that there is currently no antidote.

It is an understatement that Americans have little confidence in announcements from the Trump administration. Trump has already lied and misinformed about something he knows nothing about. The virus will disappear in April? Really, this virus is not related to flu. We'll kick out a vaccine in a few months. Wrong, CDC and NIH tell us such developments run from 12-18 months. We're doing a great job, we have this covered. Really, how?

So who do we, the American public go for accurate information? Even the CDC has been criticized by the Stable Genius for driving the Stock Market down. The Trump nut brigade, Limbaugh, et.al. are looking for scapegoats. Scapegoats??? Who do I trust? Unless Trump manages the information from CDC and NIH, then they get the nod. Others WHO, PBS, and BBC are candidates. Any RW source is s**t.

Of course not. I don't trust federal government at all.

Was ot worth what? I don't approve of politicizing anything.

It reminds me a little of the Y2K hype. The only difference is that Y2K wasn't real. Fear mongering and hyperbole in both cases, though. I would say that the epidemic will spread and finally recede like all the others before it. We will be able to add Covid19 to the list of viruses available during flu season. Life will go on.

Why are you only concerned about the Trump administration? Surely all partisan political actors would have an interest in misrepresenting the facts in a way they think will favour them. It could be argued that you're doing that yourself, even if you're not conscious of it?

There are plenty of independent organisations and individual experts we can get reliable information from. I don't see why we need to listen to any political operators at all.

Slight tangent but Y2K was very much real. I personally fixed code that would have failed at the turn of the millennium if we hadn't. That was at a hospital too. It was certainly exaggerated and totally misunderstood by a vast swathes of people but there was a real element at the core. If anything, that makes is a closer comparison to the coronavirus outbreak.

This time we've got Trump! We've really, really got him! Or not . . . .

Trump has now acknowledged the the Coronavirus is serious by appointing his Vice President to oversee the program. I understand the unease with which our leftists take that since they are thinking how their stomachs would have plummeted had Barack assigned stupid ol' Joe Biden to head up the Ebola problem task force. That aside he has asked Pelosi and the presidential candidates to cease trying to panic the nation. It will be interesting to see how Trump deals with this as more cases ramp up since the Left has insisted on open borders.

Yesterday morning I bet a half-million bucks on Trump's approach. It made great money yesterday, today is already doing the same. Keep it rolling.

    Didn't read Orangemanbad thread.

Just the lastest gov-edu-union-contractor-grantee-trial lawyer-MSM canard to enlarge and enrich itself at the rest of our expense.

Anyone remember when AIDS was going to kill 25% of the hetero population?

Anyone remember when the polar icecaps were going to melt by 1990?

    Killer bees?

Same horseshit, different decade. Don't buy it.

I too was contracted to fix code that would have had disastrous consequences if left unmodified. The Y2K problem (which BTW was not a computer virus) was very real and would have affected many different industries if left uncorrected. On the bright side I made a ton of money correcting code that in some cases I originally programmed. Don’t underestimate viruses, they can have deadly consequences. They’re nature’s way of pruning the population.

People are dying, but you made great money by gambling on volatility? Wow, time to be proud of yourself. Trump and fans never cease to amaze at how low they can go to scrape the bottom of the barrel.

Maybe people would have more confidence if he didn't appoint a science denier and anti-evolution guy to head the response. That's exactly what I mean, in a post-truth world, hacks like Pence, who CHOOSES to be misinformed about science, get the top jobs. Newsflash: the virus doesn't care about your politics, and if Pence is a creationist or not, it is going to do its thing. Maybe he can pray, as he did during the HIV outbreak in his state. Let's see if it helps.

That's the Left's objection to Pence? He believes in God? Well at least he knows how to pray when all the panicked leftists begin to hyperventilate and point up at the falling sky with trembling fingers. Unlike Nancy Pelosi, Pence might actually mean it. You never know.

I have confidence that the VP isn't doing the medical research....I have confidence the former Gov, Setor, and now VP (the people voted for ) nows how to mange people....

but in your post-facts world that isn't gonna cut it.

Glad the VP is putting people in place that need to be there...like https://www.state.gov/biographies/deborah-l-birx-md/

But why let facts get in the way of your post-facts world view?

I know of no responsible adult in my family, neighborhood, or partners that believe your reality. As an aside, the Polar Caps have almost gone along with much of the permafrost. Responsible adults are watching and keeping abreast of developments as reported by reliable news sources, evidently not yours. We look at CDC, NIH, and BBC tacking data. The situation is threatening much of the northern hemisphere and is spreading. It bears watching.

Only folks easily influenced by questionable sources (drink bleach!!??) are intimidated by developments. The rest of us are watching events unfold and remain calm.

The common influenza kills 61,000 people each year in the US. The Corona virus has killed- Zero. It has about the same survival rate as the common influenza, 98%.

Nothing I do will impact what happens in the work to combat this virus. But apparently you feel that if people are dying, the right thing to do is stop thinking and lose money?
Then- if the fantasy fears about this virus became reality, who would be around to fund the battle against it? Awesome thinking, QNerd. Just awesome.
That explains why the America must never allow liberalism or socialism to control government.

Can't comment on the topic of the thread, can you? Let me ask you this question: Do you trust Trump that he will do the right thing to contain the virus, even if it could cost him re-election?

Not sure what yesterday's exchange has to do with this thread? Also, how do you come to the conclusion that my posts yesterday had anything to do with science denial? Without further elaboration, I am not sure what you accuse me of?

And there the left goes politicizing a disease outbreak for political gain. I don't trust any politicians on this there simply isn't enough information from trust worthy sources on this, starting with the Chinese government. I wouldn't be surprised if some time in the future we discovered this was little more than a way to cover up for a major rebellion at a Chinese prison factory and the wholesale slaughter of most of the prisoners.

Read the post more carefully this time:

The common influenza kills 61,000 people each year in the US. The Corona virus has killed- Zero

Note the reference to "In the US".
Also note that the normal influenza deaths in the US are 61,000 per year..... and the influenza death rate is about identical to the corona virus rate.
